Upgrading graphics card in Dell Dimension 5150

Jump to solution

Hi All

I have a Dimension 5150 Desktop and it works fine, but am using a 3D CAD program and the screen regularly freezes.

I understand that the standard graphics card should be upgraded.

The only upgrade I have done is increased RAM to 4GB

Machine is 32 bit, runs Xp professional and CPU is 2.8GHz (2 CPUs'), Direct X 9.0c

I would like to upgrade the card and have read that a ATI HD4650 512MB card would be a satisfactory choice as I do not run high end gaming.

Any help would be much appreciated in suggestions of a suitable card upgrade.

Thanks in advance - sjlk

The 5150/E510 CPU is a 64 bit CPU.  There are reports on here of users installing Windows 7 64 bit in this model.

I have an older NVIDIA 8600GT in my E510.

I have an E510 which is identical to the 5150.

Doing a google search for the 512 MB version of this card shows that it has been discontinued and not in stock (e.g. newegg.com and compusa.com).   But, if you have a source for one, make sure it's the PCIeX16 interface model and not the AGP type.

The 1GB memory model would be preferred over the 512MB model, especially doing CAD graphics.

There are newer cards but they would involve upgrading the power supply (wattage) to handle them and also to provide the PCIe power connector.

Thanks for that. The power supply is 305 Watts so I'll just have to do the look around i guess. Some cards spec's refer to 64 bit memory...would these still work in my 32 bit machine albeit slower?
