Video Card or Driver not compatable with Windows 8 message?

I'm thinking about upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 8. I ran the Windows tool to check compatability with my current system and got the message that the following item was not compatible: 256MB ATI Radeon X1300PRO Secondary.  Is this my video card or is this a video driver? Is this something that can be upgraded? If so, what's the cost? My computer is the Dell Dimension E521 that I got back in 2007, as I recall. Thanks for any help!!! :)

The X1300 can be upgraded to a silent HD5450 up to and including the Sapphire HD7750.

All radeons earlier than the 5xxx, 6xxx, 7xxx series are end of life end of support.

You can get it to work in WIN7 and WIN8 but only 32 bit versions due to WHQL certification required for 64 Bit windows.

All of the X series and radeon 9xxx series are end of life.

The x1300 was a budget card in its day, and a good budget equivalent is the 6450.

I had two 5450 cards, but they had compatibility issues with some older motherboards. I haven't had any problems with the 6450.

6450 is MUUUCH FASTER than the X1300.

I am having Issues however with Catalyst 12.10 and up.  13.10 crashes on 64 bit windows vista or 7 or 8

never installing.  12.8 seems fine.

It fits in a desktop case but not in an SFF Case. I talked with an engineer about this at work.  While you could CUT

off several inches of the hard drive bracket and use a laptop drive mounted to that bracket it wont fit in the slot as is.

The other mod is to cut off the plastic pins and one of the blue holder pieces for the hard drive and shift it over 1/4 inch away from the slots. In general it does not fit in the SFF.  IT fits fine in the DESKTOP version by moving 2 capacitors slightly left.   Low profile cards with low profile heatsink will fit.

So in conclusion boys and girls it DOES NOT FIT inside the SFF or the USFF.

The USFF because it has no slots.  This first picture is the DESKTOP NOTE THE CDROM COVERS THE HARD DRIVE AND NO OBSTRUCTIONS TO THE LOW PROFILE VIDEO CARD SLOT.

THE PIC BELOW is from a 620 because thats what I have on hand The principle is the same.

Note How LOW PROFILE the heatsink is.

Below is how to remove the hard drive.

If you remove the hard drive the ASUS card will go in.  HOWEVER the hard drive will not because it HITS the heatsink.

  1. Unpack the replacement hard drive, and prepare it for installation.

  2. If your replacement hard drive does not have the plastic drive bracket attached, remove the bracket from the existing drive by unsnapping it from the drive.

  1. Check all connectors to ensure that they are properly cabled and firmly seated.

  2. Gently position the drive until it clicks into place.

I can confirm that the Sapphire 6570 low profile fits in a GX620 SFF case without modification. I confess I haven't tried a 6450 in this machine, but it's worth it to spend the extra $10 if it will save hacking the case.
