Vostro 200 CPU Upgrade

Does anybody have a CPU compatibility list for the Vostro 200?  I've fallen back on the computer knowledge curve and find so many processors available. Right now it has an  E2140 and I'm looking at something like the E6300 - a bit faster and not too expensive.  I see one at Newegg for $78 with free shipping.  TIA

Hi Bev it also definitely runs an E5700 3.00 Ghz Dual processor which is usually about 25.00 GBP on ebay (because I run one in mine, but I was wondering if it might also run an intel PENTIUM D 945 SL9QB SL9QQ 3.4 GHz 4M LGA775 Dual Core. If it does, you should be able to get one of these quite cheaply.

Nipx

Appreciate the heads up on the E5700 3.00 Ghz Dual processor and the Pentium D Presler 945 is not listed as compatible.

Yes, all the BIOS versions are compatible with XP Professional.

After installing XP, did you install the drivers in the correct order?

After installing XP, you need install the drivers and applications in the following order,

Desktop System Software [if applicable]
Chipset
Video
Network Interface Card [NIC], aka Ethernet.
Audio
Modem [if required]
Then all other drivers and applications.

Followed by installing the Anti Virus utility, updating the definitions, then all the critical Microsoft updates.

A hint: Don't use Dell's download Manager, choose 'Download Using My Browser' when selecting the file to download and reboot the system after installing each driver.

hey thanks for all the quick replies.

So, Im just now at the 1st step which is installing a fresh HDD. My questions is, is the new BIOS, 1.0.16, compatable with windows xp pro? Im on my second try here as the first try something went wrong. Booted up with windows xp, formatted the new hdd, started installing all the drivers and all was running smooth and quick. After I got through all the installs I restarted and I ran into some errors which caused the computer to hang bad. Im now reformatting the brand new hdd and trying again. Heres the drivers I went through and installed --- <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy>--- any ideas/suggestions?

I probably installed in the wrong order... both times now... hahahaha . I actually installed them with a thumb drive... Im on it now and its running fine so far. Just reformatted and started over... Need to install anti virus and hopefully im good...

Now to look for the CPU and maybe throw in 2gb of RAM...

Thanks!!!

Yes, TigerDirect are wrong.

AMD Processors are not supported by the Vostro 200 Mini Tower, Intel processors only.

No need to upgrade the power supply, the default 300w PSU, will support the Radeon HD 7750 without any issues.

I have been using a Radeon HD 7750 in an Inspiron 530 MT that is a clone of the Vostro 200, with a 300w PSU without any issues.

Note: Prior to installing the processor, check that you have BIOS Version 1.0.16 installed, when support for new Intel CPU's was added.

Also, the Vostro 200 was shipped with two different motherboards, one version only support's Core 2 Duo processors and the second version support's both Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors

Dell rates their power supplies using the mean average, while other manufacturers rate their power supplies by the peak power, plus the graphic card manufacturers overstate their cards power requirements.
