Vostro 220s CPU Cooler

Jump to solution

Hello,

I've bought a Vostro 220s a few years ago and it is working fine. However, I'd like to upgrade the Intel Core 2 Duo processor to a Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 (not sure which yet).
I wanted to know if the cooler that came with my Vostro 220s is capable of keeping these new processors cooled, but I can't find the info about it anywhere.

If someone here can answer me that or give me a hint of where to look for the information, I'll be most thankful! Smiley Happy

Are you intending to install a non-dell motherboard?

If you are, then you will need a new heatsink, as the Dell heatsink will not fit a retail motherboard, plus you may need to buy a new copy of Windows, as Dell's OEM copies are tied to their BIOS.

The Vostro 220s does not support any of the i3, i5 or i7 Series processors, they require at the minimum a different motherboard.

Hm...

Now that is disapointing, I'll have to check that Windows thing. Though I've upgraded it to Windows 8 so it shouldn't be tied to Dell anymore... I guess...

As for the heatsink not fitting another board... Why does Dell make everything so customized? >.<

Well, thank you for the help Smiley Happy

If you have a retail copy of Windows 8, then you should be fine.

It because Dell is in the business of selling new computers, not upgrading them.

If you want to soup up your Vostro 220s, I suggest an SSD and 4gb of G.SKILL DDR2 RAM.

If you want to install an aftermarket motherboard, you will have to cut out an opening for the IO shield at the back of the case. Furthermore, unless you can find a motherboard with LGA775 mounting holes, you'll have to grind off the CPU heatsink bosses that are an integral part of the chassis. If you do find such a board and you don't want to grind off the bosses, you'll have to use spring-dampened screws to attach the heatsink rather than the stock pushpins.

It's Intel: the mounting holes are spaced differently for the different CPU sockets.

If you're still interested in replacing the board, here's one that may work with the stock cooler and mounting bosses: www.newegg.com/.../Product.aspx

All-solid capacitors, four slots, USB 3.0 and SATA 6GB/s. It's a beast!
