Vostro 270 MT Power Supply

I  have a Vostro 270 MT (tower), which I want to change the power supply in (to a much higher power rating). Can I replace it with any ATX 24-pin power supply? (ie - is the Vostro 270 MT power supply a non-standard dell-specific wiring?)

Many thanks,

Paul

Yes, standard ATX power supply units, with either a 24-pin or 20+4-pin main motherboard power connector, with or without the on/off switch, would be compatible with the Vostro 270 MT.

You should be able to buy a compatible power supply from either a local or online computer store.

Note: For the Vostro 270  Mini Tower, a power supply with four SATA power connectors is required.

Also answered my question!...although has raised another ;-)

Would the EVGA NVIDIA GT 740 SC 4GB Graphics Card  fit into a dell vostro 270 MT?

Thanks Bev, your advice was spot on. Any standard ATX power supply will fit, and it does require minimum of 4 sata power connectors (2 for existing hard drive and cd-rom, and two for expansion in the future).

For anyone reading this, I ended up purchasing the following, and fitting to my Vostro 270 MT (tower, not the slimline desktop version):

ThermalTake TR2 500W - this has plenty of molex and sata power connections, as well as a single pci-e 6 pin connector (can always merge two molex later to make a second pci-e 6 pin if I upgrade the motherboard to a dual-graphics card config, highly unlikely).

Gainward GTX 660 graphics card - at the time of writing, the best value/performance nvidia card available according to my research and evaluation.

They both went straight into the Vostro, no problems at all with fitting or cable lengths, and has been 100% stable since. Performance has been astounding (I have the i5 3450 vostro), I've been running 2650x1440 on my new Dell U2713HM with all graphics options turned on, for lots of brand new titles - Planetside2, Civ5, Euro Truck Simulator (better than it sounds!).

SHESAGORDIE,

Thank you very much for answering this question! I had this question and found a fast/easy answer with 1 quick Google search thanks to you! I ran over to Best Buy and bought an ATX power supply (Dynex) that worked and was installed in less than 10 minutes. Thanks again!

It's possible to fit most cards, if you are prepared to mod the case. I fit a long card (390x nitro) to mine, had to use a chisel and hammer to cut the bolts holding the hard disk subchassis in place, removed the sub chassis and relocated the hard disk to the 5.25" bays.
