Vostro 3250 - 4GB RAM installed 2.09GB Usable problem!
We have had delivery of 135 Vostro 3250s. When I checked the RAM it says 4GB RAM installed 2.09GB Usable. Resource Monitor reports Memory 1953MB Hardware Reserved. This happens on them all.
Is there anyway to reduce this as it seems excessive.
I have upgraded the BIOS to v3.2.3 and we are running Windows 7 32bit, the installed RAM is on a single stick.
Any advice is most welcome.

why do you install 32bit version? this is the problem...32bit system can use only ~3gb of ram
and video card integrated use the same systema ram, so 3gb - vga ram = 2gb memory avaiable
remove 32bit and install 64bit (product key is the same...)
bye

Thanks for your reply. We are a school and have a lot of legacy software, we are completely 32bit and have never experienced this problem before especially as we have all Dell equipment, mostly OptiPlex systems with integrated graphics. I am just installing the 64bit version now to try that out.
I always thought that 32bit could use 4GB of RAM though.

The maximum amount of memory a 32-bit OS can address is 4G, but it won't all be useable by the operating system -- some is used for internal purposes, and on this model if you ordered it with the Intel GPU, the GPU has no dedicated memory of its own - it uses system RAM for video purposes.

Yes I understand that but 1953MB for video purposes is a bit excessive and cannot be adjusted. I've never had this experience on any new Dell PC before and I've worked with them for 16 years, I would have expect a small amount to be used by the Hardware but not half the available RAM.

Bear in mind that Windows 7-10 allocate quite a bit of resources to the GPU -- because the offload quite a bit of processing to the GPU rather than the CPU.

major software are 32bit and 32bit software WORKS also with 64bit version!
in fact also micrsoft provide 32bit program in 64bit version (for example Internet Explorer..... )
a 32bit program run faster in a 64bit system/machine
