RE: Vostro 430 Wont Turn On

Hi Emanuelitz,

The light you see at the back of the system is the Power Supply Diagnostic LED. Generally, if the Power Supply Light Led is not lit up, the power supply is defective, since you see the LED lit up, it indicates that the power supply is working fine.

What is the status of the power button light? Is it off/ solid amber/ blinking amber/ solid blue/ blinking blue?  Do you hear any beeps at start-up? Check the diagram for the Power LED status:

You can also check the troubleshooting steps mentioned in the link below.

Please reply with status of Power LED light so that we are able to assist you further.

RE: Vostro 430 Wont Turn On

Hi Emanuelitz,

Thank you for your reply.

Since the power light is turned off, it indicates that the system is either turned off or is not receiving power. Try the steps below and check if the status of the Power LED changes. Please go through the "Working on your computer" section in the Vostro manual prior to removing parts on your computer. Remove parts only if you are comfortable doing so.

For Vostro Manual: http://dell.to/18GZwQl

  • Remove any Power Strips and verify the wall outlet is functioning properly.
  • Swap Power Cables with the Monitor, if possible. If the computer powers on after swapping the cable, replace the cable.
  • Unplug the Power Cable from the wall outlet and hold the Power Button down for 30 seconds to drain all the residual power from the computer.
  • Remove all external devices.
  • Plug in the computer and try to power it on. If the computer powers on and has a blue power light, start re-attaching the devices until you determine which device was causing the failure. Once the faulty device is determined, replace the device.
  • Reseat all Power Connections and the Control Panel inside the computer.
  • Unplug the Power Cable and disconnect all Hard Drive Power and Data Cables.
  • Remove all PCI, PCI-E and AGP expansion cards.
  • Remove all Memory from the computer.
  • Plug in the computer and try to power it on. Does the system startup now?

If the Power LED still remains off:

  • Disconnect the I/O Panel Cable from the Motherboard.
  • Test the I/O Panel. Does the system power on after disconnecting the I/O Panel? If not then:
  • Swap with a known-good Power Supply if available. Does  the system functions properly with a known-good Power Supply?

Please keep us posted on the results so that we may assist you further.

Thanks & regards,

Try the following, if you are comfortable working around computers:

Note: The only 100% method of testing a PSU, is to install a known working power supply.

Unplug the cord from the power supply, hold the power button in for about 15/20 seconds, open the case, unplug the 24-pin power connector from the motherboard and jump the Green wire to one of the Black wires, reconnect the power cord and power the system, if power supply's fan and the hard drive run, then the PSU should be good.

Note: Do not remove any wires from the plug, use a small piece of wire or a paper clip as a jumper.

Power supply checks out, again disconnect the power cord, hold the power button in for several seconds to discharge the residue power, reconnect the 24-pin connector to the motherboard.

Remove all PCI cards from the system, take out the video card [if applicable], disconnect all peripherals, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard and disconnect the power & data cables from all drives.

Reconnect the power cord and power system on, see if you get a different LED indication on the power button, or 'Beeps'.

No difference, remove the memory from the system and try again.

Still shows no signs of life then you are looking at a motherboard replacement & maybe a processor.

Note: The processor rarely fails and the only method I know of checking a processor, is to install it a compatible working PC, or use a known working processor.

Bev.

RE: Vostro 430 Wont Turn On

I took it to a computer repair place yesterday to check the power supply and he said it was fine. I then ordered a new motherboard and installed it today, but no change. I took out the memory and still nothing.

RE: Vostro 430 Wont Turn On

Hi Emanuelitz,

Thank you for your reply.

Generally, a replacement motherboard or power supply would have resolved this type of issue. However, prior to replacing the motherboard, did you remove the other system parts as requested, to determine if it was not any other part which was causing the problem?

Check if the replacement motherboard is compatible. Check with another power supply also, if possible.

Please reply if you have further queries.

What if i told you nothing was wrong with your computer except that the button to turn it on broke? You replaced the motherboard and memory for nothing.

Well atleast thats the most likeliest case as I have a vostro 430 right here with broken power button and i fixed it without any replacement parts!
