RE: What is Dell planning to do about this: Severe Intel security issue may impact all Macs and Windows PCs?

Because the processors would have to be completely re-engineered, as they no doubt will be -- but since there are literally billions of them out there, and they go back to 1995, so many are out of production, the only practical fix is at the software level.

It'll be interesting to see if Intel delays releasing new generations of CPUs to re-engineer them (which it can't afford much time to do -- given that AMD apparently is not affected, and does have the most competitive alternatives it's had in just about ten years ready and waiting for buyers).

Further ironic is the near term release of the Intel 8809g CPU - the first one that's an Intel CPU and AMD GPU fused together akin to what AMD sells as its APU line.

Can you fix a CPU like firmware or something?  I always thought the CPU was permanent?

CPUs aren't firmware upgradeable -- removing the performance "shortcuts" Intel took with these CPUs requires a silicon-level redesign.

The problems will no doubt get fixed -- with successive generations.

If it's true as AMD claims, that its CPUs are not designed with the same vulnerability, it'll be interesting to see what effort Intel is forced to expend to keep its performance competitive with AMD's Ryzen architecture.

It is a hardware that for expediency has to be fixed with software.

What a mess!

Ryzen CPU's are falling by the wayside in audio (recording studio) applications.  Its still Intel for recording studio systems.

Here is what company that custom builds systems for recording studios and video posted about the Ryzen's.

"Given the current state of motherboards, we won't build Ryzen/Threadripper machines for clients.

If you're tech savvy, you can deal with the hiccups.

Many folks just don't want to deal with these issues... and especially not when paying $1500 for a CPU/motherboard.

Professional clients (composers for TV/Film) can't deal with any down time."

According to this article, www.zdnet.com/.../, there also needs to be firmware (technically still software) updates from respective hardware vendors. Also there is this article, support.microsoft.com/.../important-information-regarding-the-windows-security-updates-released, that says your anti-virus software also needs to be updated.

RE: What is Dell planning to do about this: Severe Intel security issue may impact all Macs and Windows PCs?

Chiming in here to point out that 3 things need to be updated to patch the bug:

1) Firmware (incorporating Intel's fix) from Dell <- Dell is responsible for this

2) Windows (via Microsoft Update)

3) Your antivirus client (via the antivirus itself)

So yeah we're pretty interested in Item #1, Dell.
