What types of processors can go into an E510 deshtop?
I currently have a Dimension E510 desktop that has a Presler D 940 processor. Given that it uses socket 775, I stupidly assumed I could install a newer chip in its place. I used a Intel Pentium Dual Core E5300. Same socket, same FSB but when I put it in, nothing will boot up.
What am I doing wrong or what did I fail to do to make this processor work?
I've used 2 new processors with the same result yet my old one works fine when I reinstall it.
Windows XP Pro; 4 Gigs memory
Also, while searching for what actually is in my system, I can not find anything that explains what kind of motherboard I have.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks

The E510 uses a proprietary board made for Dell by Foxconn. It will take only the older Pentium 4 design (and PentiumD). No Core-based CPUs are supported.

I have an E510. Our E510's will take up to a D945 CPU (we have many documented posts on this on the old Dell users forum). As you have a D940 now there is nothing you will really gain by replacing it with a D945. The Intel site says the chipset we have will support up to a D960 dual core but the custom Dell implementation limits it to the D945. It will not accept newer CPUs such as the Core Duo or Quad Core CPU's.
As the E510 is a "BTX" style, not ATX and has a Dell proprietary and undocumented front panel connection, replacing the motherboard with a Retail BTX motherboard is not possible.

I have to concur with fireberd on this one. I replaced the Pentium D 940 with the D 945 in my E510 and it did not make any difference. The Windows Experience Index subscore for the CPU barely budged, rising only 0.1 points to 5.1 over the D 940. The only nice thing about the D 945 is its lower TDP, which is 95 W compared to the 130 W TDP of the D 940. So the D 945 generates less heat. But, the 945 is the best that the E510 can handle so there is that.
