Where to put a wireless internet card???

my son just got a xps 400, and we're trying to put a wireless internet card in it. We can't figure out where to put it. The only bay open is not configured to accept the card. Do I have to pull something out to make it fit (like the ethernet card?)

Any help is appreciated

XPS 400
XP Media Center Edition 2005
Pentium D 830 3GHz
2GB DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz
256MB PCI Express x16(DVI/VGA/TV-out)nVidia GeForce 6800
DataSafe 160GB
X-Fi PCI Sound Card
1394 port added in back

The XPS 400 has two PCI slots.  The ethernet network adapter is integrated on the motherboard, so it is not occupying a PCI slot.  It is likely that the slots are occuppied by a modem card and a sound card, but it depends on the options you ordered with the computer.  If one slot is occuppied by a modem, then that may be the logical choice of the board to remove so that you can install the PCI wireless card.   Another option is to get a USB wireless network adapter, in which case you won't have to remove any of the PCI cards.

The USB adapter also lets you position the antenna for the best possible signal.

Sorry- forgot to mention it has a modem card.
We pulled the modem card, inserted the wireless card, and everything is up and going.
It looks like there is one other slot available. What is that slot for?

in all honesty, if your kid has an xps 400, the best place to put the wireless card is back in the box. take it back to the store and trade it for some shielded cat 6 cable. just an opinion.

What are you getting at - the kid would be better off with a wired system? It's the same internet.

...

The extra PCI slot could be for whatever you wanted. Some popular uses are Sound Cards, TV Tuners, Modems, Ethernet (Wired or not), Port Adapters...

Not that going wired is really an option for his computer, but why would you recommend that?

I have a linksys wireless-G router...I ran the ethernet wire to it then put the wireless card in my other computer...Bad thing is now everything is really slow even with the speedbooster & i have to unplug the power to the router every morning to get the internet to come up...

indeed, the wired internet is the same as the wireless internet. wireless is just problematic. i have always found wired to be less troublesome, and usually the throughput is better.

We used the D-link airplus extreme, no problems yet, and everything (including our son's 400) seems to be running top-notch. No problems with connecting, his feed is great (100 mbps+), and minimal lag with his online gaming (usually around 30-40 it seems like). Knock on wood!!!!

...." wireless is just problematic"....

Well....I've had a Dell i2650 and D8300 configured with wireless Linksys cards along with a "non-Speed Booster" WRT54G-G router for 2 years and have yet to run into any semblence of "problematic" issues. Perhaps said problematic issues were/are a matter of failure to follow instructions?
