Will XFX HD 5770 work in Dell Dimension 9100?

Spec:

CPU: Pentium D 950

Ram: 4 X 1GB DDR2 667

GPU: X600

PSU: Corsair HX520

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate

Bios: A03

I am thinking to get a used one from eBay, Kijiji, craigslist, etc.,  but not sure about its compatibility with the PCI-E x16 slot of the motherboard.

This is the card I am planning to get: http://ncix.com/products/?sku=44932.

I did some searches and it appears quite a few people have no boot/black screen issues:  http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=260&threadid=124445

Any advices?  Thanks in advance.

Hi Virtuman,

It should work but you need to check if you've got the room in your case based on what other cards you've got in there. The PCI Express slot is the older standard, but PCIe 2.0 is supposed to be backward compatible.

I think you would have better luck getting an Nvidia card which are all 2.0 versions.  As stated, there have been issues with the newer 2.1 versions and older motherboards that only support 1.0.  Dell may not have come out with a newer BIOS version to support 2.1 on older systems that lost system support years ago.  You can look at the GTS 450 or GTX 550 Ti.  The HD 5770 falls in the middle of these two performance wise.   I would not buy a used video card unless you are able to return it based on it just not being compatible even though it would work in another system.

Thanks osprey4 and Kelbear1 for your replies.

Just as you guys have stated, my two major concerns are whether the dual slot video card will fit in this particular BTX case/motherboard and its PCI-E x16 1.0 compatibility with 2.0 video card (as mentioned in my first post).

Well, I bought the card anyway (if it does not work, I will just put it in my other custom system).

So below are my results (for future references for those looking to upgrade their Dimension 9100 with dual slot video cards):

1) My main worry is the height of the card in which I thought it might hit the bottom of the heatsink casing.  Turns out there is plenty of room left (approx. 0.5" of space).  See the following picture:

Below is a picture of how the video card fits overall:

2)  The only minor issue is regarding the retention mechanism of the heatsink casing.  Now you have to use a bit of force in order to close it securely;  and it "sticks" so snugly against the side casing of the video card (see pictures below):

4) Then I proceeded to connect the monitor via DVI.  Powered everything on and it worked right away (no black screen or slow boot issues as others had reported)!!!  There you go, dual slot HD 5770 PCI-E 2.0 works on an ancient chipset/bios/btx :)

It should work if there is space in the case.

The other pictures of the 9100 which is also a BTX case are similar so the fit could work.   However, you cannot put an HD 5770 in your case because your power supply will not support it.  You only have a 305 watt unit.  The 9100 has a 375 watt unit with the necessary 6-pin PCIe power cable required to hook up to the HD 5770.   You can only look at the HD 6670 or HD 7750 as possibilities.

The HD 5770 has been replaced by the HD 6770 so it is much harder now to find the HD 5770 anymore.  HERE is the XFX HD 6770 out today.  It is 8.7" long.  There are other ones that are shorter.   With the design of your case and the video card's fan facing up, you should look for cards where the fan will not go under the heatsink housing where it would restrict air flow.  Therefore, some measurements would be needed.

if i  put out the heatsinks and replace power supply 305 watt to 550 watt then ati xfx 5770 will work or not and you said that the ati xfx 5770 has been replaced by the hd 6770 this card is also a dual slot card which means that it has two backplate on the card like xfx 5770

and i live in pakistan i dont know it is available in pakistan

Before you go through too much trouble and expense, what is the reason for the upgrade to the HD 5770?  You can upgrade the power supply if you want, but you cannot pull out the heatsink if that's what you are referring to.  I really cannot tell from the picture how much room you have.  Like I said, it is best to take some measurements.   The older HD 5770 seems to be 8.5" long and 1.5" thick which are the two sizes you should be concerned about.

XFX also made the single slot version of the HD 5770 if that's available.  The fan is up towards the front of the card so there would be no interference.
