Will this card fit my Precision 490 Workstation?
First of all I want to thank Hunter for this thread, and JMichael (and everyone) for the interesting and very informative replies/responses!
I purchased a refurbished Precision 490 Workstation that just arrived today. (yay!) The one I bought has the following specs:
- Dell Precision 490 Workstation Case
- Dell Motherboard
- Two Dual Core Intel Xeon Processors at 2.0GHz Each for Total of 4 Execution Cores
- 500GB SATA Hard Drive
- ATI FireGL V3350 Video Card with Dual DVI Output
- 750 Watt Power Supply
I bought (after consultation with Tiger Direct) from NewEgg.com the following (refurbished) graphics card:
In the specs on the card it says that it is 'dual slot' however, the specs on the 490 show that there is one PCI-e 2.0 x16 slot. The guy from Tiger Direct said (after looking at the specs for the 490) that it would fit. So my question is - is that the case? (no pun intended... okay, maybe a little :emotion-2: )
Also, since the card is a refurb, it does not come with any cables or cd with the drivers. I found the item on the EVGA site and saw that it (originally) comes with two cables for the power - it looks like two 6-pin Molex cables (3rd photo from the left, top row), It also says:
Requirements
Minimum of a 450 Watt power supply.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 24 Amps.)
Two available 6-pin PCI-E power dongles
And the folks reviewing the item on NewEgg.com said that they had to order separate power cables - so... I ordered two of these. Will those work with the Precision 490 and this card?
Additional Info: The 490 that I bought has the following:
- 2 PCI-e x8 slot wired as x4
- 1 PCI-e x16 graphics slot
- 2 PCI-X 64bit/100MHz slots with support for 3.3v or universal cards
- 1 PCI 32bit/33Mhz slot
I'm really crossing my fingers and toes that these will work together because even though I don't game (except SolSuite Solitaire lol) I do a lot of 3d work in 3dsMax, (so CUDA is incredibly important!), Daz3d and also a lot of work in Adobe CS5 programs, so I had to upgrade to the Precision 490 Workstation (am also installing 8GB RAM (4x 2GB each) for a total of 10GB RAM. Hoping it will be a monster and my models will look astounding in my renders!
Any/all assistance is greatly appreciated!

Given that the 490 Motherboard has 3 PCI-E slots with the X16 being in the center I would say yes it fits the slot.
Whether or not it fits length wise or past the heatsinks I have no Idea.

Thank you so much, SpeedStep! I was unable to figure out what the motherboard was, so wasn't sure. I really appreciate your rapid response.
I do note that on the spec sheet for the gtx 460 that the dimensions are as follows:
• Height: 4.376in - 111.15mm
• Length: 8.25in - 210mm
I think that will fit but will open up the case with my trusty dusty tape measure just to be sure.
Thanks again!
