Win 7 crash on old machine

Help appreciated please with an old Inspiron 531

1) get a Win7 crash with strange screen patterns

2) Fault check Win boot gets stuck in loop

3) Boot screen unreadable (see picture)

4) Unbuntu DVD wont load

Is it graphics card problem ?

It's hard to say. My way of troubleshooting would be to swap in known good components, starting with the power supply.

Check the reading of the power button LED, is it Steady Blue, Blinking Blue, Steady Amber, Blinking Amber, or off?

Are there any 'Beep's', if there are, please post the sequence of them?

Are you using a discrete PCIx16 video card, or the integrated graphics?

RE: Win 7 crash on old machine

In my experience, this is a graphics card problem.  Try using the one on the mobo.  You may need to load a new driver (Windows 7 ought to do this for you).  Sometimes the connectors on the video card make poor contact because of dust.  I clean the connectors (gently) using an eraser.  Good luck.

If you are using onboard video then your ram is bad.  If its an add on card then the card is bad.
