Windows 10 stopped recognizing 2560x1080 resolution for Dell U2913WM Monitor

I have a Studio XPS 435T driving a U2913WM wide-format monitor (DVI cable) and it had been working perfectly at the 2560x1080 resolution for several years.  Then a few days ago I stepped out for a few hours leaving the computer on, and when I returned the display was changed to 1280x768 and everything looked horrible, all stretched out.  The 2560x1080 mode wasn't available as a display choice in the System menu any more!  I suppose windows update did something bad while I was out.

Anyway, I just now fixed it by following the suggestion I found in another thread in this forum, titled "Windows 10 stopped recognising second monitor" (November 23).  The display adapter is "ATI Radeon HD 4300/4500 Series", and although the device manager says no driver is required, when I used the Device Manager to choose "Update Driver" --> "Browse my computer for driver software" --> "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer" ... lo and behold there were a number of drivers listed.  I selected the second-newest one, and the resolution problem was fixed.  Thanks guys!

There seemed to be three copies of the latest ATI Radeon driver 22.19.128.0 (dated 7/25/2017), so I chose the fourth one.(dated 1/13/2015).

This card is legacy.   Directx June 2010 as well as the Legacy Driver and DOTNET 2.0 3.5 is required for CATALYST CONTROL CENTER.  Automatically Detect and Install Your Driver DOES NOT and WILL NOT ever work with LEGACY cards.  Auto Detect will NEVER work for this card EVER.

You download the file and extract to a FOLDER then run dxsetup.exe

You will have to use the Legacy Drivers for this card or get a newer one.

Thanks, but I don't want to update the driver.  Windows 10 updated the driver without my asking, behind my back.  I just posted what worked for me to restore the correct driver version, to help anyone else searching for solutions to the same problem.

Windows 10 did not "Update" the driver.  Windows 10 uses directx 12.

They will also revert to this driver when you INSTALL FEATURE UPDATES Version 1511 to 1607 to 1703 to 1709. Windows 10 will ALWAYS revert to Legacy vga during Feature upgrades. There NEVER WILL EVER BE WINDOWS 10 DRIVERS for the legacy products that only do directx9 or 10 and now 11.

Radeon™ HD 4000, HD 3000, and HD 2000 Series

Radeon™ HD 4000, HD 3000, and HD 2000 Series are directx 9 and 10.   Windows 10 uses the Default VGA Driver which does not support 2560x1080 resolution or dual displays or True color or video accelleration. Any legacy cards will default to this driver during feature updates.  CCC (Catalyst Control Center) is a DOT NET 2.0 application and this too was removed from windows 10.  So legacy direct play as well as DOT NET 2.0 3.5 must be manually re installed. As well as DIRECTX 9 AND 10. You have to enable legacy features like DOTNET 2.0 3.5  and Directshow.  You must then install DIRECTX JUNE 2010 DRIVERS by downloading the file and extracting into a folder and running DXSETUP.exe.

Directx June 2010 which you download and extract to a FOLDER then run DXsetup.exe as administrator.

After years of active service, the ATI Radeon™ HD 4000, ATI Radeon™ HD 3000, and ATI Radeon™ HD 2000 Series products reached peak performance optimization on October 15, 2013, and were transitioned to a legacy support lifecycle. No additional driver releases will ever be made for these Directx9 and Directx 10 products.

ATI recently added HD5000, 6000, 7000, 8000 Directx 11 cards to LEGACY Status as well.

This means legacy cards will not "auto detect" and install anything more than the VGA Driver.

AMD Radeon™ R5 235X, Radeon™ R5 235, Radeon™ R5 230, Radeon™ R5 220, Radeon™ HD 8470, Radeon™ HD 8350, Radeon™ HD 8000 (D/G variants), Radeon™ HD 7000 Series (HD 7600 and below), Radeon™ HD 6000 Series, and Radeon™ HD 5000 Series Graphics products have been moved to a legacy support model and no additional driver releases will ever be made.
