RE: Windows 10 works fine on OptiPlex 780 SFF

My Optiplex 780 does not function well with Windows 10 x86. The PC has 4GB memory and is significantly slower with Win 10 compared to Win 7. The PC randomly enters an offline hibernation-like state, even though hibernation is disabled in the power settings. When the hibernation-like state occurs, the PC will not respond to the power button and the only way to restart is to unplug from power and then plug back in. The PC never acted this way with Windows 7. Soon I will have to exercise the option to return to Windows 7.

BTW, I have upgraded 6 PCs to Windows 10, here's a quick summary of my results:

Optiplex 780 - see above.

Latitude 5530 x86 - completely hosed the sound system with bad static. Reinstalling the sound driver did not help. Used the option to return to Windows 7.

(2) Optiplex 9020 x64 - Windows 10 hosed the sound system with bad static in both PCs. Moreover, sound now plays through both the sound bar and the internal speaker at the same time with no way to turn off the internal speaker (not even in the Bios). Would not make any difference anyway. The sound quality is terrible. Windows 10 also caused Office 2013 file extension recognition problems with one of the PCs. If you double-clicked a docx or xlsx file, Office popped up an error saying the file was corrupt - when in fact it was not. Office 2013 had to be completely reinstalled on that PC. Office "quick repair" was no help.

Precision 2800 x64 - this PC "upgraded" from Windows 8.1. The sound quality has been severely degraded by Windows 10.

Surface 3 with i5 processor - appears ok with Windows 10, though I have not listened to an audio file on the PC so I do not know if the sound system is ok.

For your  Optiplex 780 problems make sure you have the latest BIOS update

RE: Windows 10 works fine on OptiPlex 780 SFF

The Optiplex 780 had the latest A15 BIOS when Windows 10 was installed.

Dell is no help:

"Product not tested for Windows 10 upgrade

Dell has not confirmed that this product can upgrade to Windows 10. Some drivers, firmware, applications, and connected devices may not work as you would expect."

The Optiplex 780 PC has only 4GB Ram and originally used x86 Win 7 Pro. Now it has x86 Win 10 Pro. And runs poorly. The PC is 4-5 years old. I wonder if it would be worth it to add memory and convert to x64 Win 10 Pro. Maybe the best option is to revert to x86 Win 7 Pro.

The sound problems with the Optiplex 9020s and Precision 2800 were solved by right clicking on the RealTek sound driver in device manager and choosing "update driver." I do not know where Windows obtains the driver, but it cured the sound problems. Why didn't the Win 10 installation program install that RealTek driver? Maybe it's only been available in the past few days.

Go into power settings and set for high performance.

Then go into advanced power settings and set the HARD DRIVE SPIN DOWN time from 20 min to 480 min,

Then Set the display shut off to NEVER

Then Set the sleeps mode to NEVER.

Several Upgraded systems hang with a black screen and must be forced off.

Once you remove all the narcolepsy its stable.

RE: Windows 10 works fine on OptiPlex 780 SFF

Hi... I upgraded to Win 10 from Win 7 on my Dell Optiplex 780 (x64) and the big issue is the onboard audio is gone and Dell Website clearly states it's not providing Win 10 audio drivers. Have tried a number of things but no go, no audio. And yes, the system is a tad slower. What *** is that the kid's PC's are all Dell 780's. Hmm.. Upgraded my Acer Veriton also but with no issues!  Rolling the 780 back to Win 7 as performed better, will have to upgrade again.. eventually. Having played around with Win 10, I do prefer Win 7 over Win 10.

Installing the 32 bit or 64 bit VISTA/7 driver gets the audio back.Same thing is true for the video if you are using onboard.
