Wireless Keyboard battery change every 10 days
Hi,
My Dell Inspiron is 2 years old and for the past 2 months i have been changing the batteries of my wireless keyboard every 10 days...!!!
I got fed up with changing the batteries of my mouse so frequently that i finally bought a wired mouse but is my keyboard dying or something...? Will i now have to buy a new keyboard as well?
Given that my computer is switched on for an average of 10 hours or so per day...but the keyboard is very lightly/hardly used... I use the mouse a lot so i could kinda understand it eating up battery life but my keyboard doesn't see much use yet it's guzzling batteries...!

Oh and those are AAs Duracell batteries every 10 days... other local Panasonic batteries last just about a week..!

If it's still in Warranty (it would have to be an extended warranty) contact Dell. If not, go buy another keyboard if you don't want to frequently change batteries. Keyboards are like Mice, not designed to be repairable.

Even sitting Idle the keyboard must maintain connection via radio so you cannot measure use as low by saying
its not being typed on. Every few seconds it transmits a heartbeat signal. Lithium batteries will last longer but cost
quite a lot more.

You are not forced to buy the wireless. The wired basic version is free and always part of the computer package. The wireless is offered as an option.

Warranty was only for a year and i didn't extend it. I already bought a new mouse about 6 months ago 'cos the left click started malfunctioning plus it was draining batteries too quickly. I'm mad at Dell for giving me a wireless bundle instead of the wired one so that customers are FORCED to buy better stuff after a couple of years 'cos things are made with a short lifespan. What's the use of buying a Dell if it can't be reliable... I'm thinking it's better to have an assembled system!

When i bought it, the wired one was not there as an option but the wireless one was the free option.

I've had a Dell wireless keyboard and mouse since 2005. Although the mouse battery needs changing (recharging) every 2-3 weks, the batteries in the keyboard lasted over 4 years before needing to be replaced. So that suggests that you have a problem with the keyboard.
