Well I got the SOD and a BSOD so I am back to Vista 32bit. My first problem came when I installed Steam for some of my games. The install went bad. Then Vista was telling me that my sound card was causing problems so it needed to turn off its enhancements. A fter that I ran a full virus scan and the sound massed up. Shuttering real bad. Tried reinstalling the drivers with no luck. Thats when I got the BSOD. I think its SLI and the 4GB with 64bit Vista. I guess I cant go 64bit with this Dell pc.

Has anyone solved this issue yet?

Which driver should I have installed for my system? If I go to the Dell drivers support page on the web, there are NO xifi drivers for an XPS730 - the only drivers I have are the ones supplied on the CD when I bought the computer in May 2008.

Is it safe to follow the link posted in this forum and install the xifi driver on an xps730 even though the dell support page does not list it?

Ok, Im not sure if this work for anyone, or, for that matter, how well it is working for me. HOWEVER...I downloaded the latest Creative drivers (2.15) and I havent had the SOD in about a week since. While I'm wary of jynxing the whole thing, I do believe that it has solved my problems. You can get the latest Creative drivers here http://support.creative.com/Downloads/welcome.aspx ---Its the Creative 2.15 drivers. Hopes this helps!

Utemetsu,

So you are using the March 2, 2008 Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi series Driver 2.15.0006 driver and do not have the SOD.

Has anyone tested the June 2, 2008 Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi series Beta 2.18.0000 driver?

Toronto699,

Thanks. I was going to try that when I went home.

Maybe this has something to do with the X-fi SOD?

This is how my machine sounds while playing any sound, except directly after reseting in creative console launcher: http://cid-0c299fb836333537.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Offentlig/L001.WAV

Hmm, after testing for a while: with the new 2.15.0006 driver, and with "X-FI CMSS 3D" deactivated it´s get´s better. Both the problem in my previous post and the SOD.

But insted i get another SOD, and the computers sound crashes and i have to reboot to get sound. Seems to me like the CMSS has something to do with the SOD. The SOD II sounds more like a radio not tuned in propely and is over after a second or two.

Could anyone else please try to disable CMSS and see what happens?

And does anyone got proper sound with creative console launcher in 5.1 mode?

CMSS is disabled on mine permanently as it made my output sound weird with voices in the wrong places.. I also have the card set in 5.1 output but still the screech continues!

i have 2 sets of logitech   Z 5000 D 5.1 speakers all settings in creative softwear are enabled , including CMSS, the  huge problem is screech. the software is set to optumin sound for the best sound quality.  i cannot stand this screech problem any more . MY XPS 720  is a paper wieght with this issue . the XPS 720 is seldom used it sits in a corner collecting dust.. the 720 can play any game without any hic-cups but useless with screech every 5 to 10 mins . screech may dissapear a few days but always comes back with more gusto..

for those of you that have the xifi extremegamer card and a 8800GT, try rolling back your 8800GT driver to 7.15.11.7474 (from the Dell driver website) this solved the screech of death issue on my xps730. It seems to be a conflict with the xifi extremegamer card and the nvidia graphics drivers. All of the nvidia drivers I have installed have resulted with a screech of death appart from the one I posted.

Best of luck

Been trying a few things to solve my screech. I have removed AVG 8.0 as I thought it was causing my computer to freeze which I am happy to report it no longer freezes :-)

Just minutes ago I thought, has it solved my screech too! Sadly not as my fears confirmed a minute later with the screech.

For me removing AVG 8.0 will probably not solve anything, cause i got these freezings with AVG 7.5 and Mcafee too.

I installed both the 2.15 drivers and tried the beta drivers that were mentioned.

The betas are buggy as a mug. I would rather deal with crashing than have bizzare sound issues. However, the 2.15 drivers seemed to have cut back the SoDs ALOT. I highly recommend them if you can use them. Other than that, I'm about ready to give up.

I tried installing the 2.15 drivers but they wouldn't install on my system.  It appeared they were installing but upon checking, the older 6.0.1.1283 drivers were still reflected in device manager.  I tried this 3 times with the same result.  These older 6.0 drivers seem to work fine for me - no SoD's at all since they've been installed.
