XPS 410 with Sigmatel: no Stereo Mixer

I do not have a Stero Mixer for some reason. I have the latest drivers from Dell. Any idea why?

I've read this: http://www.ekhoury.com/2006/08/25/sigmatel-stereo-mix-support-for-dells/

But it doesn't work for me (removes Sigmatel device).

I am trying to record a video of my desktop but there's no sound and I assume this is the problem.

The issue of no "stereo mixer" (SoundBlaster calls it "what you hear") is a known issue in many new PC's including other brands not just Dell.

On SOME systems if you go to the Control Panel/Sounds and then the Recording Tab and RIGHT click in an EMPTY area of the panel there MAY be an option to show disabled devices and in SOME systems there will be the system mixer.  If you have that you can then enable that device.  This is only a possibility and not in all systems.

Otherwise please explain what you mean by "record a video of my desktop".  It may not have anything to do with the system mixer.

I have no Recording tab there.

I mean using Windows Media Encoder to record a video of say playing a game. No sound is recorded, even though sound is being played. All programs have this issue and I am assuming it is due to missing Stereo Mixer.

What Operating System do you have? XP or Vista?

You must have a "Recording" Tab   In Vista, Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Recording.  In XP it's Contol Panel/Sounds and Audio Deviced.   There has to be a recording tab so you can select for default, for example your microphone or Line In.   However, the System Mixer (What you hear) could be the problem since you need the System Mixer to record streaming audio from the Internet.

If there is still no Recording Tab and panel, uninstall the sound in the Device Manager then restart the PC and Windows will find and install the sound.  Check after it's been reinstalled to see if there is a Recording Tab.   If there still is no recording tab, reinstall the sound drivers.

Do you have just the basic SigmaTel Audio or do you also have the SoundBlaster Audigy Advanced MB SOFTWARE enhancement?  If you also have the Audigy Advanced MB, reinstall that also.

I have XP. There's no Recording tab, although there is an Audio tab with a Recording drop down. I don't have System Mixer in the drop down.

I have the basic.

You would have to install a PCI sound card that has that function, in order to use it.  The $30 SoundBlaster Audigy SE will do that (it has the "What You Hear" capabilit - what SoundBlaster calls the system mixer).  There are other SoundBlaster Xfi cards and some of these have the function and some do not.  The only issue with installing a PCI sound card is that you will lose the front panel headphone and mic capability.

Why is new hardware required when the link I posted in the first post resolved other user issues with software? I'd rather not have to get new hardware when it seems software can solve this.

Read the other many posts on this forum about no System Mixer on new Dell's.  There have been many posts about this in the last couple of years.  Many have installed PCI sound cards just to get the System Mixer function.

The link you posted only referred the user to download the SigmaTel drivers and since you have downloaded and installed the Dell drivers and it still doesn't give you the System Mixer the ONLY option if you must have this function is to install a PCI sound card that does have the option (SoundBlaster calls it What You Hear).   I'm not trying to hassle you - just giving you an option and what others have had to do, as yours is not the ONLY one that doesn't have it.

If you had discovered this within the Dell return option timeframe (21 days from the date the PC was shipped) you could have returned it and bought some other brand that does have it.

Alright here is a solution to get the mixer working on dell machines that use SigmaTel audio. Before you do anything save your registry settings first.

First make a copy of C:\drivers\audio\onboard\92XXM2-3.INI or 92XXM2-3.INI under C:\Program Files\Sigmatel\C-Major Audio\WDM\ or search for this file.

Then open the original file, not the copy and select all and paste ontop of the selected/replace the foillowing excluding the

Then search for 'KeepAdcAlwaysOn', from - - , and where ever you find this key create another binary key under that registry folder and name the new key DigitalStereoMix and set the value to 01.

The latest IDT drivers on the Intel downloads for the DP35DP motherboard also includes the System Mixer.  I can't say it will work on Dell's and anyone that uses it, does it at their own risk.

I have an XPS M1730, Vista 32. Would this solution work on my machine too? (hope so) Thanks.
