XPS 420 (425W PSU) and NVIDIA GTX260

The GTX 260 uses 3 amps (36 watts) less power than the 3870X2 that is offered with the XPS420.

As shown in the power consumption chart here.

It based on that Chart. I will go with GTX 280 .. having dilemma wheter GTX 260 or GTX 280. I also having XPS 420 with 425 W

Thanks for your help guys.  I'm in Australia and once the GTX 260 Core 216s turn up at retail here I'll grab 1 and post my results.

 

update: I've placed an order for an EVGA GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 Superclocked.  Once it arrives I'll let you know how I go.

The ATI 4870 x2 doesn't look like it uses that much power, could a dell 425w PSU support it? If not, could you link to some compatible PSU's that may be suited for the job?

Thanks for that, I think I may go for this PSU. You may have seen my thread about abn OCZ PSU I bought, it made my fans run at 100%... I believe the Antec is tried and tested in the 420, correct?

I think you would be pushing way too hard if you try that.

The Antec EA 650 is a good psu at a pretty good price

Yeah, I'm no expert on computers but I can't see why it would do that either, maybe the PSU  was just faulty somehow? It only affected the fan which was connected to the motherboard, the other fans that I connected directly to the PSU itself ran fine, as did the GPU fan. 

 

I tried it several times though, checking connections, reebooting, checked BIOS for any problems. One strange thing to note is that CPU-ID reported my processor as running at 1.5ghz with the OCZ and when I connected the Dell PSU up it went back up to 2.4ghz. I'm just glad no harm was done.

 

Anyhow..thread derailed. I just ordered the Antec, it was a lot cheaper than the OCZ. Thanks for the advice.

 I just read it.

 Don't understand why it would cause the fan to run like that, it's just another standard ATX psu.

 I recommended the Antec because it's a good psu with more power than you need at a good price.

So there you go guys, if you're looking for a nice video card upgrade I can confirm the EVGA GTX 260 Core 216 Superclocked Edition works with the 425W PSU that comes with the 420.

what card did you upgrade from? Is the card noticably faster? Runs hotter / cooler? Fans louder?

 

I am, wondering what you have seen after a few days as I was thinkinh of this upgrade myself....

I upgraded from a 9800GT, I found the card lacking at 1920x1200.

 

The EVGA GTX 260 Core 216 Superclocked Edition is heaps faster than the 9800GT at 1920x1200.  Every game I have including Crysis (using DX9, everything on High) is playable at my 24" 2408WFPs native res.  I've noticed no changes at all with my computer, no louder, no fans kicking in.

 

I'm extremely happy with the upgrade and would recommend it to anyone.

 

My computer has a Q6600 and I applied the tape mod to that once I was happy with my GTX upgrade.  So now I've got a computer running at 3 GHz per core, with a great graphics card.  XPS 420s really do rock!

I currently have the 8800 gt and use 1920 X 1200 resolution on a 24" display. I have already gone 64-bit, added a sound card, and 8 gb RAM, leaving the video card and processor next on the list...

 

I was worried about a couple of capacitors on the MB - they looked close to being on the way...

The Dell has a proprietary motherboard but uses a standard ATX power supply.

If you check the XPS FAQ you'll find a PCP&C Silencer 500D listed, the "D" meaning Dell, the only difference between it and the regular Silencer 500 is the lack of a switch.
