XPS 420 Power Supply replacement question

What all are my options for replacing an XPS 420's PSU.  Is it limited or can I use just about anything out there.  Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: XPS 420 Power Supply replacement question

Why bother? You probably void your warrany and the Dell power supplies are vastly underrated for there actual capacity. They are fine for almost any use.

Re: XPS 420 Power Supply replacement question

You can in fact change the PSU from the XPS420 to another brand other than dell. There have been a few posts here linking to a particular manufacturer that fits the 420. Also CHrisM who is the moderator of this forum have also post up links to the psu, so i don't think it will void your warranty.

Re: XPS 420 Power Supply replacement question

Well unless the Dell PSU that they rated at 375 clocks in at 550 or more I want to replace it and I also have no care for the warranty.  In regards to the changing it to other brands, is there like multiple ohters brands or do I have to rely on just one company?  Here is a link to the PSU I'd like to throw in there http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16817121025.

Re: XPS 420 Power Supply replacement question

I think your best bet would be to take out the stock PSU, get the H-W-L measurements and then compare that to any of the PSU that your are interested in. Only thing that is important about the PSU, is it should be able to lock down on the clip that is part of the 420 case. Luckily dell's mobo is non-proprietary, so aftermarket psu connections would fit.

The Dell psu is pretty hardy but not 550 watts worth.

For the money your looking to spend you could get a much higher quality power supply.

The Corsair HX620 in my sig is $15 more at Newegg, but has a rebate that would make it less and can be found at Buy.com for $120 AR.

It fits ( although there would be a .5 inch gap below it, just as there would be with any other aftermarket unit, due to the Dell psu being taller than standard )  The Kingwin should fit, though it is about 1 inch longer than the Dell and those connectors add to it more than normal modular cables. Oh, and there's really no need to worry about the psu lock down clips on the case, the four screws in the back should hold the psu.

It can provide 50 amps of it's power to the +12v rail. ( Same as your choice )

It's 80+ efficient. ( Compared to the >70 of your choice )

5 year warranty ( Couldn't find that info for your choice )

Connectors aren't as fancy ( but are much easier to change out if needed )

Re: XPS 420 Power Supply replacement question

I replaced my power supply with an antec earthwatts 650 tonight.  Its a little shorter and deeper, but the screws

held it in fine.  I bent the clip back about a quarter of an inch to get it to fit because of the depth.  The hardest

part was  getting the wires out from under the processor and fan shroud without removing it.  Works fine though.
