XPS 420 Soundcard SB0770 - can't record internet radio
As a follow up to several threads I have seen regarding the SB0770 soundcard. Can anyone please address the following questions/issues:
1) Screach of Death (or so it has been called): Is this something a new driver can remedy?
2) What is the latest driver for the SB0770 card? Where can I download it?
3) Why can't I record internet radio? There is no recognized input on Roxio Creator Premier 9. Is it true the SB0770 has disabled that feature? XPS Premium support staff are unaware of this and cite 3rd party software (Creator) as the source of the problem. I thought Creator Premier was proprietary to Dell, so how is it 3rd party?
4) What is Dell doing for customers who have the SB0770 card?
Thanks,
Todd.

Scan though the various posts here. There have been many posts about both of the issues you have. They were also highly discussed issues on the old Dell Forum.
I've seen several posts by XPS users that have removed the SoundBlaster card and went back to the Integrated Audio just to get rid of the screeching problem.
I've seen posts that you can use the Retail SoundBlaster drivers with the Dell OEM version card.
One thing to try, to get the "system mixer" or "what you hear" function so you can record streaming audio. No guarantee that it will work but worth a try.
“Go into Control Panel's "Sound" then "Recording" Right hand click in a blank area and check "Show Disabled Devices" Then click properties and under Device Usage click "Use this device"

I did not see the old Dell forum, but did search all related threads here.
That's a good solution, but did not work in this case.
I contacted Creative at the time I posted and have since learned the following:

I replaced the SB0770 soundcard with SB0460, installed Creative's 2_18_2004 driver, and corrected the record what u hear problem. The Roxio Creator Premier 9 software that came bundled with the 420 can now record internet radio.
It would have been nice had Dell Support not dismissed the record what u hear fault as "a 3rd party software issue" some 10 months ago when I called for their help. It was clearly a hardware limitation of the OEM hybrid soundcard SB0770.
Problem solved.

Forgive me for jumping into your conversation but this is the closest solution I have found (after hours of searching and Easy Audio Capture trials) to the similiar problem I have which is "Can not record internet radio".
I have an XPS 420 with Roxio Creator Premier, Xcelerator, and Sound blaster audigy mb audio
My question is you say:
"I replaced the SB0770 soundcard with SB0460"
This means you changed your soundblaster card correct? I can't find the SB0460 on the creative website can you give me the name of that version?
Also, is the installation plug and play? Any other problems you encountered?
I appreciate any help. I don't want to call Dell support. I have found that I spend hours explaining what I have already tried and it's just a pain. They probably won't help me anyway if Dell won't support recording what you hear.

The SB0460 is their Xtreme Music soundcard. I can only find support for it here:
http://support.creative.com/Products/ProductDetails.aspx?catID=1&CatName=Sound+Blaster&subCatID=208&subCatName=X-Fi&prodID=14066&prodName=X-Fi+XtremeMusic
I've seen them on eBay; $35 on a good day.
It was sort of plug & play - after you delete the old driver, remove and replace the card, let Vista help install the new card, and use the driver downloaded from Creative. If possible, I suggest getting an installation disk with your card.
Good luck!

I got stuck with the SB0770 on my Nov purchase of a 630i & I paid an extra $100 for the sound card. Thought I was getting an high quality sound card. Wonder why they use that model?

Hi, the problem of sound card to record internet radio have been discussed for many times in this forum. You perhaps can find other good answers. Some tools may help you record radio from iTunes and radio stations more easily. Check your soundcard and make sure you can hear sound normally, you will be allowed to record audio.
