XPS 420 with 1505 Wireless Card not detecting anything
Hello,
I purchased a brand new XPS 420 with a 1505 wireless N card which was delivered last Saturday. Everything seems to be working well except my wireless card. It is not detecting any wireless networks within range. I also have a Latitude D630 sitting right next to the XPS 420 and it works just fine. I contacted Dell Chat support and they said I had to connect to a wired connection to configure the wireless connection. This is not possible. My home only has wireless coming from an access point in the attic (I could run a wire but it would be a real pain). Does anybody know why I would need to connect wired to configure the wireless? My laptop works just fine and I never had to do that.
thanks,
Barry

Barry,
I usually start by asking the most basic questions, which in some cases may be taken as insults by the recepient, but I have had my good share of times when I was trying to figure out what is wrong with my graphics card only to find out I have not yet turned on the monitor! :)
So, after explaining why I'm going to ask this :):
- Did you hook the external antena and secured the cable with the supplied screws?

I had the same symptom with mine at first but it turned out to be an operator error.
I connected the external antenna but it was not inserted as far at it should have been. There was no blue LED on the antenna box, but I was none the wiser because i didn't know there was an LED that should have been lit.
I noticed that my my WLAN signal was very weak despite being only 12 feet from the wireless access and it wasn't until i decided to investigate that i discovered the antenna connection was out about 1/4". Once i insterted it correctly my signal jumped to full strength and has been great ever since.

I did connect the antenna securely with the screws and I was getting a blue connection light on the antenna itself.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Yes, it is backwards compatible.
I'm using my on an 802.11b or g router.

Thanks everybody for your responses. I am on the road all week this week but when I return home on Friday I will follow Dell's suggestion to connect wired. I will then get back on chat with Dell and see what they say. I have a Linksys WRT300N wireless router so 802.11a, b, g or n is not the issue. I tried forcing b and g on both the wireless card and the router to see if that would help and it did not. I suspect the card is bad but we will see.
Thanks,
Barry
