XPS 435mt memory - installed vs available 12GB/8GB

I purchased this computer from Dell with 12GB of memory. I checked it over when I received it and Windows and the BIOS indicated 12 GB of memory was installed and available.

Lately I have system hang-ups. After checking for error messages in Event Viewer and running Dell's Diagnostics' along with the BIOS settings I find that now I have 8GB of memory available with 12GB of memory installed. Can anyone explain this discrepancy and how can I correct it?

OS Windows 7 Pro

The only changes were after Dell replacing the Blue Tooth keyboard and mouse twice; I took out the Blue Tooth Card and replaced my keyboard and mouse with a wireless USB and added a third HD. Everything was working find until this past week.

Hi nkqx57a,

The amount of usable memory are not the exact amounts. Usable memory is a calculated amount of the total physical memory minus "hardware reserved" memory. The reduction in available system memory depends on the configuration the devices that are installed in the computer and the memory that is reserved by those devices

You can try updating the BIOS on the system to check if the usable memory changes. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the OS, then download the BIOS from BIOS section onto the system and install it.

Please refer to the video in the link below for updating the BIOS.

Please let me know if this helps.

The BIOS is current (v1.1.4)...System Info below:

System Information report written at: 11/06/13 10:29:55 System Name: NEAL-HOME-PC [System Summary]

Item Value  OS Name Microsoft Windows 7 Professional  Version 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601  Other OS Description  Not Available  OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation  System Name NEAL-HOME-PC  System Manufacturer Dell Inc.  System Model Studio XPS 435MT  System Type x64-based PC  Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU         920  @ 2.67GHz, 2668 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)  BIOS Version/Date Dell Inc. 1.1.4, 12/21/2009  SMBIOS Version 2.5  Windows Directory C:\Windows  System Directory C:\Windows\system32  Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume1  Locale United States  Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "6.1.7601.17514"  User Name Neal-Home-PC\Neal  Time Zone Eastern Standard Time  Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 8.00 GB  Total Physical Memory 7.99 GB  Available Physical Memory 5.32 GB  Total Virtual Memory 26.0 GB  Available Virtual Memory 23.1 GB  Page File Space 18.0 GB  Page File D:\pagefile.sys

Yet the BIOS detects there is 12GB of memory.

My mistake...the BIOS detects only 8GB. Does this mean that there is a problem with the motherboard? There are 6 sticks of memory that was shipped with the unit on the motherboard. As I said 12GB were detect when I got the system from Dell. But lately have been having problems with I believe the video card, but not sure yet. Any ideas?

Hi nkqx57a,

I would suggest you to perform hardware diagnostics outside the system by following the steps below and reply with the findings.

  1. Turn on or restart the computer.
  2. Immediately at the Dell logo screen, starting tapping the key once a second until the One Time Boot menu appears (if the computer boots to Windows turn the computer off and try again).
  3. At the One Time Boot menu, press the arrow key to highlight Diagnostics, PSA+ or Enter ePSA, then press to begin the hardware Diagnostics.
  4. Write down any error codes listed. Reply with the error codes.

Also, Try swapping the memory from one slot to another (one at a time) and check if the system is working.

Did as requested...when the diagnostics stop (after DTS test) indicating that more tests would take 30 mins or more to run I said NO. All tests that were run PASSED.

I have not try swapping memory yet, because it requires taking out one of the hard drives to get access. Will let know the results maybe next week.

Thanks,

Neal

I took out the memory 6 slots...reinstall 2 sticks at a time, one channel at a time. It seems like the 12 GB of memory is good; the problem appears to be the memory in the 3rd channel is not being detected.

Also having problem with my Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1250 (Model 79xxx, Hybrid ATSC/QAM) card... the TV video freezes for a few seconds and then continues.

Could this card being going bad, which is causing all these other symptoms?
