In Task Manager, View menu, Update speed, you can change the refresh (update) rate of those graphs and same for prodcesses tab; you can also pause the update. Changing that setting does not affect the frequency of the HD activity LED blink. So I'm sure that there is no connection.

I don't have a Dell XPS 630, but I do have a 650i motherboard, and have had this problem as well.

If you're willing to do without Autorun, this may work for those with the blinking LED, it did for me.

Start>Run>Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SYSTEM->CurrentControlSet->Services->Cdrom and change AutoRun to 0 this will disable Auto Insert Notification.

I Have The Same Problem On My Dell XPS 630I With Linux (Open Source Linux Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 3) So I Don't Think That This Is Microsoft Windows Related, Just FYI.

Correction: I used 2 have this problem in Linux when I installed Myth TV 4 Ubuntu (it would stay on all the time after installing it, most likely because that causes SQL Server 4 Linux 2 be installed), but the Nvidia ESA Firmware Update fixed that problem, now it only blinks every 3-5 seconds, just fyi.

Hi I called Dell and they told me that it is normal for the hard drive light to blink because windows vista has technology built into it that monitors the computer all the time. I have windows vista ultimate

I have Vista Ultimate too - be surprised if it was responsible for all the blinking. Anyway Ive put a sticker over it; otherwise my xps630 has been fine.

Does it happen on XP?

I had XP and it was ok. They told me that Vista is more sophisticated.

Cool, but can you set the lights and there is no problem?

Or is all the problems with vista users?

The problems are not just with Vista users.  There have been no Vista related problems talked about in these forums.  There are Vista problems of course, but NONE of the issues that you read about on these forums about the 630i are being caused by any operating system.  XP users have had the same problems.

Before someone posts an ignorant response such as, "I have XP and have had no problems", I will speak first.  I have Vista and have had no problems.  In fact, I love Vista for the most part.  There is no reason to fear Vista.  In fact, DirectX 10 is pretty awesome in the games that I play.

As I Previously Mentioned: It Blinks On Both Open Source Linux Ubuntu 8.04.1 And Open Source Linux Fedora 9.0 As Well, So This Is Something Completely Un-Related 2 Just Microsoft Windows Only, Just FYI.

The Speed Of How Often It Blinks Has Slowed Down Since The Recent DELL BIOS And NVidia Firm Ware Updates, However (It Now Blinks Less Often).
