I'll have my Q9450 in hand this evening to try as well.  I already have the A06 bios and it installed with no issues.

Ryan,

Please let me know what your CPU core temperatures are...  Mine is kind of high!

Thanks.

Well,

I'm having issues getting the Yorkfield to POST.  I can put the Kentsfield back in and all is good, but I just get high fan output and default upper and lower leds set to white.

Quivver,

Did you have to jumper the RST jumper or change any of the clock settings in the BIOS to get the Q9450 to POST?

Ryan,

I initially installed my Q9450 on A05 and got the same problems you're stating:  high speed fans and lights fully on white.  Then I went back to my original E6600 and everything went back to normal.  Then I installed A06 while on E6600 and everything appeared to work perfectly.  I replaced the old CPU with the new Yorkfield and did a boot.  I right away noticed that the system didn't go into high speed.  I went into the BIOS and it showed the proper info for the Yorkfield (see pic posted on page 4 of this thread).  I didn't have reset any jumpers or change any of the clock settings in the BIOS. Although those may fix the problem...

I just recently upgraded to the 720 board from the 710.  The BIOS was pretty much set to default settings with the exception of some RAID settings getting enabled.  Did you overclock the Kentsfield before you went you upgraded?  If so, are any of those settings causing this?  I would try restoring the BIOS settings to default... Make sure you don't lose your RAID 0!!!

I do still get the lights turning full white on bootup, they turn into red (the color I set it to) after the BIOS appears on the screen.

Keep me posted...

Yeah, it's normal for the lights to start default then change.  Mine do it too.  Well, I might just have to try again tomorrow.

I will probably reflash and restore factory settings.  The metadata is on the drives for my RAID so I'm sure it will just reinitialize.  I left the system at default 2.66Ghz.  I did try the RST jumper once I noticed the high fan speed and no POST.  I swapped the procs back and forth a couple of times and I continue to get the same results with the Yorkfield.

I also most hate to ask, because it would require removing your door, but when you get a chance could you let me know which board revision you have?  Mine currently is A00, but sometimes newer boards get utilized.  It would just be good to know if we have the same board.

I'm going to check more into the Q9450 I got when I get to work tomorrow.

Thanks for the response.

Ryan,

I just opened my case and according to the sticker that is on the board right by the secondary power cables (to the left of the battery) it says REV A01.  This could be because I bought the board from the XPS 720 Upgrade program...

BTW, I just ran Stress Prime 2004 to put the Q9450 under stress and I got my proc temps up to 60C according to Core Temp...

I keep asking the same question and from readings, the gains are minimal..definatly not worth the hefty price increase.

I'll let you know the results this weekend. UPS just showed up with my Q9450 so I'll begin working on it tonite, I think. I don't have a Q6600 to compare it with, but enough of you guys have them to compare to.

On another note, it'll be for sale in a week or so, after I get my test results.

Did anyone try a q9550 or a QX9650 with the A06 bios. Only the QX9650 is available now in the Netherlands, thinking of buying it but only if it works with the XPS720

Winngames,

I upgraded from a stock E6600 so my performance gains were pretty good and I got a really good deal on Q9450 ($270, after discounts and gift cards)...  So far Ryan and I have installed this chip on the 720.  I got mine to work and Ryan didn't have much luck last night but he is going to play around with his settings and report back.

I was almost ready to buy a QX6850 and then this processor came out, but I look at it as a much cheaper alternative that I can probably overclock to perform in the 3.0GHz+ range.

According to Chris M from Dell:

"Bios A06 added support for the Quad Core Yorkfield 9300/9450 but not the 9550."

I'm not sure what that means for the QX9650...  It would be pretty cool if it did!

Huggy_Bear, on the RS forum has a QX9650 running on an XPS 720. He had to jump through some hoops to get it running though. The end result was that the chip ran, but the multiplier was locked @ 9x.

He installed A06 the other day, and nothing changed.

Thx for the info. So now I have to choose between the Q9450 which has the new SSE4 instructions and 4Mb cache extra or a QX6850? How much warmer does a QX6850 get then for example a Q6600 which is now in my XPS720
