XPS 720 CPU Side Panel Slipped Off
The side panel on my XPS 720 slipped off. I bought 3M - 3/4 inch two sided mounting foam adhesive tape which is suppose to hold about 5 lbs. I bought this width as that seems to fit the parameters of the area where the old adhesive left imprints. The panel appears to weigh between 3 and 4 lbs. The CPU is still in excellent condition. I have not applied the new tape as of yet.
Could someone please advise if this would be the way to go? I originally had a computer tech rep put on two sided tape; however, my hubbie bought light duty two sided tape and actually did not have enough to cover all the areas. We rushed to buy the tape the same morning the rep was coming out as he did not have any materials with him. It held for about a few months and the panel slipped off again. I do not feel comfortable using any type of glue compound. I wish Dell used screws and perhaps this would not be a problem. I am wondering if the tape did not hold as it was meant for a light duty item. I thought I read that it is important to have all the corners covered for a better mounting.
I would appreciate help with this issue and wonder what Dell 's solution would be. 3M advised to ask the manufacurer.

which side panel are you talking about? The left side panel was never held on with just tape and the right side had a latching system.

3M foam tape is good for pictures and light use but not this application. We use double sided foam tape for automotive applications. Much stronger. Amazon has several.

Hi Legslujack,
The foam tape is thicker and should hold. We had the same problem in an older Dell and found some really nice, very sticky double sided foam tape and never had the problem again.

Thank you. Do you remember about how wide it was?

It is the left side if your looking at the front. It was held by some type of adhesive which gave out. I am not sure what type of adhesive was used as only remnants are left. I didn't say it was tape; however; nothing else is holding the panel. Trust me.

Hi Osprey4. I am sorry to trouble you again, however, I have tried a couple different types 3M foam types of adhesive but it is not holding the panel as it has slipped off once again. Do you remember what was the name or product number associated with the tape that worked for you?
My hubbie actually did a very neat job in placing the pieces in all the grooves. This held for a few days. I did buy an adhesive called Joe's sticky stuff. which is not as thick and have been reluctant to try it as of yet
Can you please respond once again with as much info as possible.
Thank you..

Thank you Osprey. Funny you mentioned this as the first time I had actually sent my hubbie to an automotive store, however, he came back with just regular foam double sided tape the store must have carried as well. I also mentioned the same concept early this afternoon as adhesives for autos have to be more aggressive/strong You just confirmed this again. I will check Amazon, one of my favorite sites. Thanks again.

Thank you. My hubbie and I did think of velcro, however we did have velcro give out in the past. Perhaps this industrial strength will not do do. We definitely appreciate your idea.

Hi Osprey. I need your opinion one more time. I am about to order the double sided tape and have chosen a couple tapes. The titles on Amazon may not describe these items as adhesives for autos, however, both are as they are VHB heavy duty mounting tapes used for heavier items. Both are or also come in 3/4 inches width which is the width I need to fill and about 45 mil thick (equivalent to about 1 1/16 of an inch). Both seem to have good reviews. I was wondering about the thickness, however, I read in one of the reviews that the individual was pleased with this as the thickness allows it to conform to minor surfaces so you can get 100% contact which may not be an issue here. Please let me know how you feel regarding this. The cost may be expensive, however, this is not an issue as I can use it in the future as long as the adhesive is a good one?
Can you please take a look at the two links below and perhaps some of the reviews and let me know if you think either will work or if you have any other ideas. The item no are 4910 and 5952. Item 5952 has especially received very good reviews. I just do not want to buy another tape that may not work. Your help is very much appreciated.

Either of those should work. Yes, a bit pricey but hopefully you'll find some other use for it down the road.

Velcro comes in 3/4 inch wide tape and is not so expensive.
