Re: XPS 730 X i7 920 memory

I have a 730 outxH2C I965 Extreme version and am very interested in what you ultimately find out.

The crucial website is also confusing,  it's memory configurator for my system does NOT list the H2C

http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=XPS%20730&pl=Dell&cat=RAM

lists the system chipset as being a Nvidia chipset.  CpuZ and any othe diagnostic I have used says mine has a x-58 Intel chipset.

It also states that the MB supports a Max Module size of 2Mb / Slot with 4 slots that would indicate 2x4=8 Mb max memory

It also states plainly that max memory is 8192MB.  But again the chipset info does NOT match what I have.

My computer is approx 5 months old but has never been used due to an ongoing dispute with Dell over a ~$5 or $10 missing Case Stand.

I am on my 5th Dell system and have always had good service but now any time I call I'm sent to India and if your problem does not fit into

their set list of answers they simply read off a canned response. The last time the lady ever said the part did not exist even after providing the page

number of the manual where it states "It is UNSAFE to operate this system without this stand installed" even show a picture. but that's not the issue here.

I was advised (after my $5000 purchase) that the memory was 6GB max.  For a system with every top of th line component available this is ridiculous.

My system has the SLI Nvida   280's and is satisfactorily fast but i feel it could be faster (without overclocking other than what the factory has already done)

It is a GREAT computer, but strange that the lower performance series offers a greater memory capacity.

Please keep us informed of your progress and I will do the same.

Thanks

Re: XPS 730 X i7 920 memory

Can anyone tell me in fact if i bought the wrong kinda of ram or if this proves that this system can't handle 4gig sticks to add up to 12 gigs?

This is how you install RAM properly, in the 730x.

Install one ram module and boot the PC.  After it posts, shut it down.  Install the second stick and boot the PC.  After it posts, shut it down.  Install the 3rd stick and you should be good.

Re: XPS 730 X i7 920 memory

My computer came with 6GB Tri-Channel DDR3 at 1066MHZ (3x2GB DIMM). Now that I have upgraded to bios 1.0.3 I have put in 12GB Tri-Channel DDR3 at 1066MHZ (3x4GB DIMM).  I have had nothing but run around with the memory with dell. The manual from day one told me it would run 12gb of memory. But dell said it would not and it would not. I had to wait 1 year for series of bios upgrades. First issue was resolved with the sli support. The motherboard would not detect sli, then that was resolved around May 2008. Then Just this last month the 1.0.3 bios was released so I could run the 4gb chips to top out at 12gb. The machine is very fast and way great for online gaming.

This is the last dell I will own, since the problems I had when I got my 630, and then with my 730x. I was able to build my newest computer with the EVGA X58 Classified motherboard. It will take up to 24gb of 1600 memory and will run tri-sli.

Re: XPS 730 X i7 920 memory

The latest BIOS release is 1.0.5.  I've been rather curious about swapping this 730x mobo out for an EVGA X58 but I've not had any issues whatsoever with my current setup.  I guess I've been one of the lucky few.

Re: XPS 730 X i7 920 memory

Make sure you are up to date bios 1.0.3. the memory you need is 12GB memory 3 x 4GB A2507437 PC3-8500 DDR3 1066MHz Unregistered DIMM . this works in the machine. it does run about 400 a chip tho. http://www.memoryupgrade.pro/dell-memory-upgrades-dell-ram-expansions-xps-xps-730x.html

Re: XPS 730 X i7 920 memory

I did try installing the ram that way. whether I has all 3 in or start with just one all I got was beeping and constant rebooting without anything coming on screen. It was probably the wrong kinda ram.

Do you know what is the difference between the 240pin or the 204pin ram? What I ordered from Crucial was the 240pin which I thought was right. It fit nicely. Maybe not.

Oh well, It was over a month ago and I've returned it already

I have the XPS 730x H2C 965 with the 1.0.3 bios. ordered in early june.

Re: XPS 730 X i7 920 memory

if it is the same as mine you use 240pin.  Did you use pc3-8500 ram? upgrade your bios to 1.0.5 http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?os=WV64&osl=EN&catid=-1&impid=-1&servicet...

Re: XPS 730 X i7 920 memory

The 730x is only compatible with 240-pin memory modules.  I use the PC3-16000 memory, and have been since February, with no problems.  There's a chance that the ram you received could've had a defective module or two.  It's been known to happen.  When I purchased my first Corsair Dominator DDR3-1600 triple channel kit, one of my modules was defective and I had to return the whole kit.  When the other kit arrived, it installed and hasn't given me any probs or errors.
