Re: XPS 730 X i7 920 memory

yea it was, the problem probably was that it was ECC ram. I tryed it because it was the most affordable upgrade kit i found and the tech/sales people couldn't definately tell me what to get even though dell was offoring 12gigs at the time for the XPS's

here's the Crucial ram i got...

Re: XPS 730 X i7 920 memory

I'm going out of my mind trying to find 4gb modules for my XPS 730x H2C with the 1.0.5 bios. I currently have 6gb installed. I use my machine for graphics and editing and would love to have 12gb in it.

I tryed to order this...

http://www.memoryupgrade.pro/4gb-dell-xps-730x-desktop-memory-1x-4gb-a2507437-pc3-8500-ddr3-1066mhz-unregistered-dimm-upgrade.html

but they said they are out of stock even though it says its instock on their website and don't know when they will have it. I'm not sure it even matches Chris Mixxon's spec for a 4gb module that was tested.

Can anyone share a link to a 4gb module that works? What about this one?...

thanks in advance

Re: XPS 730 X i7 920 memory

Hi,

Did upgrading to BIOS 1.0.5 work for you?  (ie were you able to get to 12gb and the memory posted?)

I have a 730x system, with the i7 965 OC'd.  Been trying for two weeks to install my Crucial 3 x 4gb memory kit (1333 mhz, 240 pin sdram).  Saw this thread, and upgraded the BIOS to 1.0.5, and my system still doesn't recognize the modules!  Been on the phone with Dell tech 5 times and this is starting to drive me crazy.

It seems like you went through the same hassle a while ago, any advice you can give, I would appreciate.

Thanks

Re: XPS 730 X i7 920 memory

I have the 730X-H2O which is about 8 months old.  The motherboard in mine is actually a "Rage".  it came with 6 Gigs which was what Dell claimed was the max

when I purchased it.  anyway I used the Kingston 12 gig kit at $1200.00 for 3 ddr-3 4 gig modules.  The key at that time was finding "NON-ECC" "UN-REGISTERED"

4 Gig modules.  For some reason they cost more than eth ECC and Registered modules.  Wish I had waited for the Crucial but I wanted the best and baddest , which I am confident that almost any XPS 730 is.  Mine has 2 Nvida 280's in SLI (thought about upgrading to 2 295's but do not really use the computer as much as I thought I would.

4 WD Raptors and a partridge in  a pear tree  ha ha ha

JUST REMEMBER TO WATCH OUT FOR THE "NON-ECC" and "UN-REGISTERED"  I've hear of people getting the other type to wor but the board manufacturer (FOXCONN) says it will not

They still make the Kingston kit if you are  desperate  but it's still like $1100.00 from "what a hen lays" don't want to get into hot water about using vendor names

Just rechecked and they aren't available for where I purchased them but here is the info for reference

Kingston HyperX 12GB (3 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) XMP Desktop Memory Model KHX1600C9D3K3/12GX - Retail

Intel XMP Ready

Good Luck

Re: XPS 730 X i7 920 memory

I think you bought the wrong ram. I don't think the XPS 730x supports 1333mhz ram. Take a look at the XPS FAQs

The only place I've found that said they have ram that works for the XPS 730x is Pro Memory Upgrade...

http://www.memoryupgrade.pro/4gb-dell-xps-730x-desktop-memory-1x-4gb-a2507437-pc3-8500-ddr3-1066mhz-unregistered-dimm-upgrade.html

but when I bought it online 2 weeks ago, they emailed back saying sorry that it wasnt actually in stock and would let me know when they might have but had no idea right when.

So I'm trying this another one from Newegg but I havent received it yet. The specs look the same as the one on Pro Memory Upgrade so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

going from 6gb to 12gb has helped my after effects work. I see a 20% impromement in render times so far.

I have the XPS 730x H2C with the 1.0.5 bios

Re: XPS 730 X i7 920 memory

Does anybody know if the 1.0.5 BIOS update expands support for PC12800 - 6GB 1600Mhz  RAM? Will I still need to change my BCLK to get my RAM to run at 1600Mhz or does the 1.0.5 BIOS fix this and recognize 1600Mhz immediately without having to do anything.
