XPS 730 maximum memory and speed

I recently upgraded my XPS 730 from XP Pro 32 bit to Windows 7 64 bit.  I am running on the original 1333 DDS3 4GB that came with the system.  I would like to upgrade it to the maximum memory supported by the new OS and the 4 slots on the system board but can not find any definitive information.  I was hoping someone here could tell me the fastest (cas latency.  the current DIMMs are 9-9-9-24.  I am looking at 8-8-8-24) DIMMs I can use and the maximum memory supported.  I also noticed some DIMM's are listed with a 2N suffix (9-9-9-24-2N) but do not know what that means. About the only information I can gather from the computer is listed below.  Thanks.

Thanks for the detailed reply, it was exactly what I was looking for when I posted the question.  I was finally able to determine the same information you supplied.  I was hoping for 16GB as the maximum and and faster memory but alas this PC is what it is.  I installed the CORSAIR CMX8GX3M4A1333C9 R  memory with similar specs to the Ripjaw memory you described and everything works fine.  The only annoyance I still have is a Win 7 popup warning that my desktop is using too many resources if I tab out from a game I'm playing.  I always select to keep it and not remind me again but it continually pops up.

I realize this is an old thread, but I just put 16 GB in my 730, and it's working.  I ordered 4 x 2 GB, assuming that was the max (per the documentation), and they accidentally sent me 4 x 4GB, and it seems to be working just fine.  Win 7 Ultimate reports 16381 MB total physical memory.

Hi Darkk Helmet,

Crucial says...

Hope that helps.

Unfortunately this did not help.  I need configuration issues other than for CD/DVD and I'm running a 64 bit OS.  The new OS is installed on a new disk drive so the Dell diagnostics are not available.  Thanks

I totally missed the Crucial link.  After looking at that it does help a bit but I still need more information.  Thanks.

What else do you need to know? By the way, Crucial has excellent tech support if you want to give them a call. They guarantee their RAM to work with Dell systems.

Additional digging gave me some of the answers I was looking for.  However, I can not conclusively determine if my motherboard support the 12800 series (1600 Mhz) or only the 10666 (1333 Mhz) memory or if I'm constrained to 1.5v?  Maximum memory from what I can find is a disappointing 8GB considering the cost and specs of this PC.  I was hoping for 16GB.  Lastly, the fastest speed supported.  I was looking for timing 8-8-8-24.

I finally ordered 2Gx4|CORSAIR CMX8GX3M4A1333C9 R as a conservative choice.  Timing is 9-9-9-24 and it's 1.5 volts.

Thanks again for your suggestions

I don't know if you ever got your answer or what the outcome of your new memory was. I have an XPS 730 with the Nvidia 790i Ultra. I researched this for a long time. If you are using Windows 7 64 bit, or any 64 bit version, the maximum memory that Windows can recognize is 8GB. 4 x 2GB. I know that Crucial show s this info, that PC-10600 is the highest they recommend. I just upgraded from 4GB to 8GB becasue I have been running Windows 7 64 bit since it became available. ther is now, PC-10666. I do not know if this is a replacement number for PC-10600 but I do know this, PC-10666 wporks just fine in my XPS 730 with Win 7 64bit. I was able to get 4 x 2GB PC-10666 G,Skill Ripjaw memory for $59.00. that is total price for all four of the 2GB modules. I did not bother to concentrate on various speed ratings becasue the PC-10600/10666 tells all you need to know. that's the fastest listed RAM on any site I have checked including the auto scanner on Crucial. FYI. I bought the RAM on NewEgg.com. It was on special so I don't know what the price is today. I bought mine about 10 days ago. I am signed up for Newegg E-blasts so I get daily email specials and I got the one for that memory 2 weeks ago.

Hi Darkk Helmet,

Glad to hear the the new RAM is working for you.

Wow, thank you.  When I upgraded the memory I got two 4GB DIMM's .  Now I'll get two more and put some more life into this rig.  Win 7 Professional should also recognize the memory I believe.

Yes, Win 7 will recognize that amount of RAM as long as it's the 64-bit version of the operating system.

I can confirm this.  I just got a "new" XPS-730 motherboard on eBay for < $50 and tried some 4gb memory sticks. Strange results:  4 x 2 x 4 x 2 for total of 12 gb did not boot.  I then tried all my available 4gb sticks, pulling them out of a Rampage II.  With those 3 sticks and one empty slot, bios showed under 250mb of memory.  However, windows 10 booted and recognized all 12 gb.   The 4gb sticks were triple channel memory from Rampage II gene CPM12GX3M3A1600C9.

I will look again at using 2g sticks with the 4gb  sticks as I would have thought that would be ok.
