XPS 730x Bios 1.0.3

XPS 730x
Intel Core i7 Extreme 965 Core Speed 3.46Ghz
Fintek motherboard
Bios 1.0.1
X58 Chipset
3GB PC3-8500 1067Mhz DDR3
SLI Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT 512MB GDDR3 Slot 19 Bus PCI-E 2.0 x16 electrical lanes
SLI Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT 512MB GDDR3 Slot 17 Bus PCI-E 2.0 x16 electrical lanes
(The top PCI-E slot 15 only uses 8 PCI-E electrical lanes so I am not using it)
Nvidia driver 185.85
160GB HDD
PLDS DVD+/-RW  DH-16A6S
Windows XP SP3

I loaded the unreleased 1.0.3 bios. On restart, I could not get into normal or safemode. The PC got caught in an endless restart loop. Jumpering the CMOS did not fix this. I then had bios 1.0.1 put onto a USB key, booted to it and reloaded 1.0.1. I then loaded 1.0.2 and had the same restarting issue. I am now back to 1.0.1. We feel that 1.0.3 is not compatible with the i7 965 and might have damaged mine. Now, the CPU is not identified in System Properties or the Device Manager.

In System Properties, my processor shows as 000 @ 3.20Ghz
In Device Manager, my processor shows as 000 @ 3.20Ghz

WOW, I just hope more XPS730x owners see this, hoping Dell comes up with a working BIOS and tells us this time what it really does!

We will get it working. I doubt we will ever release everything a bios update fixes.

Chris,

Have you tried running the Intel CPU ID program and see if it identifies your CPU correctly?  Also, what does your BIOS screen show for a CPU?

Trying to follow your steps and assuming you only had 1.0.1 from the start, have you EVER had 1.0.2 working?  If not, then 1.0.3 may be OK, and your system just has some other issues.

Can you post what changes 1.0.3 gives us?  Hopefully they fixed SLEEP mode failing to wake up when BCLK is greater that 133Mhz..  That is a BIGGIE, if you ask me, as the XPS 730x is meant for overclocking, and I certainly cannot afford to run this thing 7/24 because sleep doesn't work, nor am I thrilled with having to wait for the darn thing to boot up multiple times a day, especially considering the LOOOONG POST times before it even boots!

Thanks.

Chris have you tried flashing back to the original bios 1.0.0?

Chris have you tried flashing back to the original bios 1.0.0?
* Nope. Went back to 1.0.1 which is fine for now.

Trying to follow your steps and assuming you only had 1.0.1 from the start, have you EVER had 1.0.2 working?
* Yes. 1.0.2 was working before I put 1.0.3 on. Now, 1.0.2 has restart loop.

Can you post what changes 1.0.3 gives us?
* They did not give me the revision notes, only the files.

Have you tried running the Intel CPU ID program and see if it identifies your CPU correctly?
* It does show it correctly, intel Core i7 Extreme 965.

Also, what does your BIOS screen show for a CPU?
Genuine Intel CPU 000 @ 3.20Ghz.

I just received my new XPS 730x yesterday and it comes with bios 1.0.3.   I am not sure what this update does since I have not found anything online here other that your post.  I assume it is now "stable" otherwise it wouldn't be on my system.  Any thoughts?

Also it seems to take a long time to go through the bios boot up.  I see from other posts that is a known issue.  Is there a way to decrease it?  Is it directly related to the number of USB devices connected?

Thanks

Mark

This is an old thread but I wasn't sure where else to pose this question...  I sthere any hope that a bios update will be released that will allow legacy mode on sata ports?  I could really use it.

Thanks,

Guile
