XPS 8100 and the i5 750

I am just curious if anyone is experiencing an extremely slow CPU (i5 750.)

Dell is still investigating, but that could take weeks if not months.

I haven't looked in the BIOS yet.... Does Turbo Mode come enabled by default, or is this something we have to enable?

The built in WIn7 performance meter shows a proc rating of 2.9 which is extremely low for BRAND SPANKING NEW TECHNOLOGY. I understand that the Windows Experience Index score is not a legit benchmark but 2.9.... seriously??? Every other score is 7.2 or higher.

Any info is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi Spastik plastik,

I have the same system. I'll have to check when I get home.

Thank you for your reply.

I just checked the BIOS and turbo mode is enabled. I just ran the Win7 Performance test again and got 2.9. I can't figure it out.

I have the i7-860 in my new XPS 8100 - it gets a 7.5. But my hard drive only gets 5.9. I think turbo enabled is the default.

There is definitely something not right.  Your WEI score should be much higher like you said.  Even my older Q6600 gets a 7.1 score in Windows 7.  You might want to download and run CPU-Z HERE (top left link) and see if the specs are what they should be for the i5-750.  I have turbo mode on which is a default setting on my motherboard, but it is not the same MB as you have.  I have 3 settings which are standard, turbo and extreme.  I don't know why Dell would take weeks to get back to you.  I would think they should have gone through the BIOS with you to make sure all your settings were correct.  However, most default settings should work correctly for you.

The highest any SATA hard drive can score is 5.9.  Only SSD drives can score higher.  Mine scores 5.9 also which is the lowest score I have but nothing to be concerned about.

Osprey4 - Which processor do you have?

Thanks for the info. I know this score isn't a true benchmark but I was wondering about the score since this system is only a month or so old! I thought your score was higher because of the RAID configuration. I thought you had said that the lowest score was in the 7's aside from the processor.

Thanks.

Ok, found it. I'm getting 7.3 for my processor and 5.9 for the drive.

Sorry, it's the same one as the OP, i5-750.

I am still showing a 2.9.

A level 2 technician is supposed to call me back. We shall see!

I am still waiting for them to call me back. Stay tuned.

They are sending a replacement processor. They did absolutely NO troubleshooting or diagnostics. I guess my word is golden.

The proc was replaced yesterday and the WEI score is now 7.1. Problem seems to be resolved! Less than 10 days. Thanks for the feedback!

Jmichael,

Please tell me where you found info on highest SATA hard drive score being 5.9.

I have 2 new Studio XPS 7100 AMD desktops (with 6 core 1055T processors) that are pretty much identical (1 has TV tuner vs. wireless card in the other). They both have 1.5 tb hard drives with 16 mb buffer.  However, the one with wireless card gets a 5.9 hard drive rating while the other one gets a 7.5 hard drive rating.  I thought something is wrong with the 5.9 one, but I've run all maintenance and pre-boot diagnostic tests and it passes everything.  Write caching is enabled on bothe hard drives.  All the other ratings for both computers are 7.4.  Thanks.

I don't remember where I saw this, but the WEI score is based on the drive's bandwidth or MB/s and either SATA or IDE mechanical drives were restricted to the 5.9 score. Additional tests were added to determine if an SSD drive was present to score in the range of 6.0 to 7.9.  I really don't see how you could score a 5.9 on one system and a 7.5 on the other with the same hard drive.  Since each score is done individually, having a base score of 5.9 based on the hard disk test is not a bad thing anyway because older drives can certainly score much lower.  I have a Seagate 500GB hard drive which is ranked as one of the fastest hard drives due to its single platter design and it scores 5.9.  The 1.5TB drives with multiple platters are generally slower.  If you are scoring 7.4 on everything else, then you have an excellent system even if the hard disk test scores 5.9.  However, I just don't know how you would get a 7.5 unless it was an SSD.  Did you try running WEI more that once?
