XPS 8100 general, delivery, delays, hardware questions and discussions

Hello everyone,

I was in the backlog of the XPS 8000 for over a month and finally after three delays cancelled it and just purchased a XPS 8100. It would be nice to post questions and comments about the whole process.

Has anyone ordered one yet?

EDD of 1/29/2010

Ordered mine today! I was looking to buy the 8000 but was waiting until after the holidays. I was a bit upset when it was removed from the website, but now I'm happy that they released the 8100, which seems to be nearly identical, but has more options for processor and graphics card.

Specs:
Studio XPS 8100, Intel Core i7-860 processor(8MB Cache, 2.80GHz)
4GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz
Dell Consumer Multimedia Keyboard
No Monitor
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5
500GB Serial ATA 2 Hard Drive 7200 RPM
16X DVD+/-RW

Estimated Delivery Date: 02/03/2010

nah, once you place the order you get an auto email saying that once your payment processed via your bank you will get a confirmation email with the estimated date of delivery and order number.

I placed the order bout 6pm last night and the confirmation email came in today bout 6pm saying that the estimated date is 12 feb 09.

I called to complain but their customer services is closed over the weekend. Will try again on Mon.

This is my 2nd dell, 1st one was in 2005 that one took bout 12 days to arrive

Est time of delivery 12th Feb 2010 :emotion-3:  I think the guy i was speaking to on the phone was saying something about the 1.8 Nvidia graphic card not being in stock hence the delay. I'm also a bit worried now cos the same guy also said that if you upgrade to 2TB then there isn't enough space for dual dvd drives.

That might be the case. I don't see any delay on the US yet.

In the UK site, when you order online and while you are choosing your system's componant doesn't it tell you your estimated shipping date?

I couldn't see anything. it might be slightly different from the US website.

right! XPS is relativley a popular computer. I ordered an XPS 8000 before this which was discountinued and I was tired of waiting. I thought I should cancel and order somthing new at least I know I may get it one day. as i have mentioned before my EDD is 1/29 but who knows what is behind the whole thing. you should keep an eye on the order from the very begining if you want to recieve your order one day.

Do you have better option in the UK?

Good luck,

I actually placed an order for the Xps 8000 2 nights ago then called up a sales rep to place it for me.

She told me to save in the basket and would call me back tomorrow to place the order as there was something wrong with their system. Next morning Xps 8000 was gone and replaced with Xps 8100.

Had to start from from the beginning but don't seem to have missed out much. We don't seem to have other options in terms of delivery but i will call up tomorrow.

My main concern now is that i Have an Iphone which from what i'm reading on here and online generally don't play nice with Windows 7 64bit with Intel 55 chipsets.

Anyone else get their first delay notice?  Ordered my 8100 the day after they were released, 1/8. Original EDD 2/3. Emailed today with delay notice. New EDD 2/10.

Oh your gonna like that. Mine is similar except I replaced the RAM with Corsair dominator and the PSU for a stronger one.  Very fast system.

Oh yeah, Love the machine it is super fast and a dream to use. Everything just loads so smoothly. The boot up and shut down time is done in seconds.

In terms of delivery I placed the order online on the 8th Jan 10, received a confirmation email next day saying est delivery would be for 12th Feb.

I actually received it on the 21st Jan. I got the automatic call from the courier service saying that it would arrive on the 20th jan but there was a mess up and it got delayed by a day.

Just a quick tip, the tracking system on the dell site does not seem to work properly. I had to call the courier service who then gave me the correct number

How did you get yours BEFORE the EDD? My system isn't too off from yours.  Same processor, same optical drive, less ram, got the 500gig HD and the ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5. No monitor and no wireless.

Well I called them up and they said that the reason for the long EDD was bcos the 1.8GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 260 which i wanted added was out of stock and once it arrived they would ship earlier.

I'm also in the UK London if that makes any difference.

I got first delay today also, no email, but the status changed on the order.  Was Feb 4, 2010, now Feb 11, 2010.

I have not called to see why the delay. I did not upgrade to the GTS 260, just kept the G-310 figuring I would upgrade when it arrived.

No they don't even list the G310 as on option. And In the US, if you go to the web page is now says Call for latest price on the Studio XPS Desktop page.

They did the same thing on the XPS 8000 at the first of the year.  I was really hoping Dell has learned a lesson with the 8000 and would have fixed it with the 8100.

I will give it another week and if delayed again will probably cancel.
