XPS 8300/8500/8700, video cards

As with a lot of people who seem to come here to see what cards do and don't work with XPS systems. I thought a definitive list should be put together. I myself have browsed this forum many times searching for what cards are compatible with certain XPS systems and there never really is a definitive answer on what ones people have managed to get working. For instance people said the GTX 6 series had trouble posting. I read on this very forum that it worked from a few people. So i bought one (Gigabyte GTX 660 2gb Windforce OC) and it worked. Updated to A06 Bios before hand. Anyway with that in mind, i think we should make a list of ones that work. So, state the system and model you have, the manufacturer of the card and what the card actually is. Once we get a nice list going i will compile the answers into this post for people who are searching for answers such as my self. Lately I've been browsing to see the compatibility of the GTX 970 with the XPS 8300 and have heard tentative results. Someone said about sticking to EVGA and Gigabyte. Its an expensive plunge to take if its not going to work. Could anyone advise?

Dell XPS 8300

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 660 2048 MB Windforce OC GDDR5 192-Bit

Dell XPS 8500

EVGA GeForce GTX 660 Ti FTW Signature 2 2048MB GDDR5 192-Bit

EVGA GeForce GTX 970 Superclocked ACX 2.0 4GB GDDR5 256bit

Nice one guys, thanks for chipping in!

So the GTX 970 works on the 8500's. Just need to know if it does on the 8300!

Would you mind specifying what make your GTX 970 is?

Nvidia GeForce GTX750Ti, Nvidia GeForce GTX745, AMD Radeon R9 270

UPDATE 12/15/14 = The A10 bios is here and on the XPS 8700 page here.

* Download/Save the file to the windows desktop
* Before running A10, I would install the prior Bios in order
* Disconnect any external hard drives, keys, printer, scanner, etc. You only want the USB mouse, USB keyboard, LAN, monitor connected
* Run the executable from Windows
* Allow the system to complete the installation and restart automatically. Do not force a restart or power off

We and Nvidia are looking into the issue, but understand, we only "test/validate" those video cards in my list. Our warranty does not cover non-OEM video cards NOT on our list. Ultimately, it will be up to the XPS 8700 Team and our Legal Team to decide if Dell is going to allocate resources to fix an issue with non-validated, non-tested 3rd party hardware. All I can do is funnel the data to them. Below are the Dell validated/tested OEM video cards for the XPS 8700 and our 460w power supply =

8MXMJ Nvidia GeForce GTX750Ti P123N, 2GB, DVI-I/DVI-D/mHDMI
TC2P0 Nvidia GeForce GTX745 M302N, 4GB, DVI-I/DP/HDMI
9YJWT Nvidia GeForce GT720 M211N, 1GB, VGA/DVI-D/HDMI
FPDH3 Nvidia GeForce GTX660 D15P2-40 V2, 1.5GB, DVI-I/DVI-D/DP/HDMI, (Win 8)
2CHCY Nvidia GeForce GTX660 D14P2-40, 1.5GB, DVI-I/DVI-D/DP/HDMI, (Win 8)
8C3R5 Nvidia GeForce GTX650Ti P122N, 1GB, DVI-I/DVI-D/mHDMI
9168H Nvidia GeForce GTX645 OHGA4/M301N, 1GB, DVI-I/DP/HDMI
R5H2D Nvidia GeForce GT635 M210N, 1GB, VGA/DVI-D/HDMI

9KYFK AMD Radeon R9 270 RD14D-P1-70, 2GB, DVI-I/DVI-D/DP/HDMI
WNMHJ AMD Radeon HD8870, 2GB, DVI-I/mDP/mDP/HDMI
51NCR AMD Radeon HD7570 M209A, 1GB, DVI-I/HDMI (Win 8)

As long as you do legacy mode and have a sufficient power supply.

You require an EPS12V power supply and the CX600M is not sufficient.  A CS750M would be minimum recommended.

* The windows executable xps 8700 A10 bios is here:
http://ftp.dell.com/FOLDER02722955M/1/XPS_8700_BIOS_A10.EXE

* Download/Save the file to the windows desktop

* All older XPS 8700 bios are here (A01, A03, A04, A06, A08):
http://downloads.dell.com/published/pages/xps-8700.html

* Disconnect any external hard drives, keys, printer, scanner, etc. You only want the USB mouse, USB keyboard, LAN, monitor connected

* Before running A10, boot into the bios to see what version you have now. I think it is always better to install the others in order before installing the latest one

* Run the executable

* Allow the system to complete the installation and restart automatically. Do not force a restart or power off

960 970 980 also requires Bios update to work.

Thanks SpeedStep for the info!  I have been looking at a XPS 8700 with a Radeon R9 270 and was concerned about the power requirements!

RE: The definitive list of confirmed working graphics cards for XPS systems.

I have a XPS 8300 with GTX 560 2Gb and I looking to upgrade to GTX 960. I know that power will not be a problem for the system, as 960 requires less power but I'm concern about PCIe 3.0 compatibility. Does anyone tried a GTX 960 on XPS 8300?

Yes, I have just installed an EVGA GTX 960 into a late 2010 xps8300 with A01 bios installed and is working fine, no hassle or trouble with install!

RE: The definitive list of confirmed working graphics cards for XPS systems.

I'm also finished to install in my XPS  8300 a GTX760, using the Power Supply original.

I have no issues and the only change was in the pinout from 6 to 8 pin power connector.
