XPS 8300, video card upgrade?

Hi ,

I'm looking to upgrade my daughters desktop with on board video to a separate add in video card. This is what I found out so far from Dell :

  • We only validated the following Dell OEM video cards on our XPS 8300 460w power supply -
    KP8GM AMD Radeon HD5450
    HWHRN AMD Radeon HD5670
    GCJ42 AMD Radeon HD5770
    2XTG4 AMD Radeon HD5870
    HCVMH AMD Radeon HD6450
    8F60V AMD Radeon HD6670
    8PJF8 AMD Radeon HD6770
    Y9XH7 AMD Radeon HD6870
    4VDWW AMD Radeon HD6950
    VH86X Nvidia G405
    X78HM Nvidia GT420
    WGP2G Nvidia GTX560

She is not a gamer but would like better quality HD graphics like 1080. Her monitor is a Dell SE1987WFP Digital. So which video card would give her the best bang for the buck? And if her monitor don't support HD, that will come next.

    Thanks in advance,

    Rich

Hi Rich,  What did you end up doing?  I am in the same situation with a Christmas upgrade to my sons XPS8300 in mind.  Do you know if the GTX1080 will work?

I posted this somewhere else in this forum but it might help answer your question:

I just installed an EVGA gtx 1060 SC 6GB graphics card (06G-P4-6163-KR) in my XPS 8300 (0Y2MRG motherboard, 460W power supply, and BIOS A06) and it works perfectly! My XPS 8300 has not been modified, it still has the original DELL parts in it. The new graphics card is working very well. I am running with 1920 X 1080 resolution, and with the games that I have tried so far, I can turn up the graphics settings to max and have very high frame rates.

This is a great upgrade that I would recommend to anyone looking to upgrade their XPS 8300 (without having to change the power supply or anything else). I am very happy!

BTW, the gtx 1080 will not work unless you also upgrade the power supply. The 1070 might work, but it is designed for a 500W power supply, so you would be pushing it with the standard 460W power supply in the 8300. The 1060 uses less power and is well within the power spec for the 8300.

I have this same system at home that my roommate uses.  Using the A06 BIOS, I am having troubles getting newer cards to work.  I have a 700W psu in it currently.  I bought 2 AMD RX 460 4GB cards, and neither will allow the system to boot, you don't even get the DELL screen.  Put the current NVidia GTX 460 in it and it's fine. Any ideas on this?

If it helps anybody, I recently installed the EVGA 1050ti. Although a little tight inside due to the relatively small casing, it fit, and it runs perfectly. Completely compatible with the 0Y2MRG motherboard on my Dell XPS 8300. It runs games smoothly as well.

Many thanks Fofini - I tried an AMD RX 460, but it wouldn't boot properly. Searched for more advice, found your post, and now my XPS 8300 is running perfectly with the EVGA 1050 ti -  http://amzn.eu/35PIdiM

Novabench score went up from 475 to 1426!

Letting you know I have an XPS 8300 with a06 bios and an "EVGA GTX 1080 SC ACX 3.0" installed, works perfectly, as long as you have a higher output PSU, (I have a 750W installed now), the standard one is not powerful enough.

The only thing I had trouble with was I originally bought the  "EVGA GTX 1080 FTW ACX 3.0" version but it was too wide (5.064 inches), I couldn't get the power plug to fit into the card as the PC case was in the way.  The SC version is only 4.376 inches wide and fits perfectly.  Hope this helps.

Curiously I found something weird with my XPS-8300, its bios is at A8 and looking I only see up to A6 supported so how did it get to A8? I purchased a Gigabyte R9 270 video card for my XPS-8300 and no go however I swapped it with an MSI R9 270 that I had in my XPS-8700 and it worked fine so now both systems are up and running. Does anyone know of a place to get custom bios builds for future reference?

Some vendors cards ONLY work with UEFI Bios.

Dell XPS 8300 and Vostro 460 System BIOS is max A06 on the Downloads Site so I'm wondering if you have an XPS 8500 Vostro 470.

There are no custom bios vendors.  Once a system reaches the 5 year mark there are usually no updates ever again.

I tried the XFX 40 8GB, it didn't work, apparently it is a BIOS incompatibility. Made me furious because I had heard nothing but good things about the AMD card... I resorted to a 960. (1060 wasn't out yet when I needed a new card.)
