XPS 8500 Operating System
Hello,
I was on chat with a dell agent last week trouble shooting a fairly new computer I purchased from a 3rd party.
After the agent led me through some things to try, he determined my operating system is corrupt, I need to delete all data, reinstall the operating system and drivers. I don't have disc that came with the computer and he gave me a link. Unfortunately the link says it's for an XP not Windows 7.
Can anyone share with me the link to find where to get the information he intended to give me on deleting the data, reinstalling the operating system and drivers.
Appreciate the assistance.
Cynthia

Forum member natakuc4 has written a wiki containing the links you are looking for. Go here, Official Windows 7 .iso Download, and choose the version of Windows 7 that is specified on the COA that is glued to the chassis. When you install, you will need to activate by telephone as OEM COA's do not activate automatically and cannot be activated on-line.
For additional information on installing Windows 7, please see this from Dell, Restoring or Reinstalling Windows on a Dell, and this from natakuc4, A Clean Install of Windows.

Thank you for your help and links.
I have so far made it to part of set up where I am asked to accept license and it locks up there. I tried again and made it as far as selection my language and it's locked up there. I will try again.
Seems odd I can't get past this. Sigh

Ensure that only the keyboard and mouse are attached to the rear USB ports beside the ethernet. Remove any other USB devices.
If they are plugged in the USB 3.0 ports these screens generally freeze.

I have made some progress in installing but just got an error saying Windows has recovered from an unexpected shut down. The error is "BlueScreen"
Help & thanks,
Cynthia

Good morning,
I ended up starting again last night, left the computer sit and it seems to be going through the steps if I just wait and let it sit. I will see how this go and if make progress to the end will let you know.

Hello natukuc4. Nothing is plugged in except the mouse and the wireless keyboard. I started again and went to install drivers that I had downloaded from the Dell site. I am getting a message that says "No signed device drivers were found. Make sure the installation media contains the correct drivers, then click ok."
I downloaded the drivers to a dvd from Dell, tried ticking "hide drivers not compatable on this computer as well as unticking.
Not where to proceed.
Thanks,
Cynthia

I didn't need to load any SATA drivers for my XPS 8300. Anyway the installation shouldn't be freezing regardless if you need them or not.
Do you by any chance have any Nanya RAM installed in the system? Remove all the memory modules from the system. Each RAM module will have a sticker saying its manufacturer e.g. Samsung, Nanya, Crucial. Remove any modules made by Nanya. Reinsert the other modules ensuring that they are firmly pressed down. I would also check to make sure all the cables are firmly inserted inside the computer, particularly the harddrive cables (on both ends). You should also check that the graphics card (if you have one) is firmly pressed down. Likely you will have to remoce the graphics card to get into the memory modules and hard drives anyway. For these steps please have a look at the Service Manual.
Once this is done please run the Dell diagnostics. Press F12 at the Dell BIOS screen and select diagnostics, run all the diagnostics and any extended tests. If the diagnostics pass reattempt installation of Windows.
If you have any Nanya RAM or the diagnostics fail please let us know.

You need to install the drivers. Download them from here (only need the latest versions).
Install in order Chipset, SATA, Video, Network, Comm, Audio

I don't see any modules of Nanya RAM. I am seeing a cable just hanging there not plugged into anywhere. I also don't see any place to plug it in.
Added pictures and not sure how much help they are.
It's a first in days that the computer is actually powering up windows but some things seem missing
Thanks,
Cynthia

Copying won't work since you need to boot to the install disk. You need to request the operating system disk here: support.dell.com/.../backupcd_form You should read and follow the directions for reinstalling windows: support.dell.com/.../document

Sorry the link I posted earlier was for the XPS 8300 not the 8500. The XPS 8500 drivers are here.
You need to use another computer to download the drivers and copy them to a USB stick.
Insert the USB stick to your 8500 and install the drivers from it.
You need the Chipset, Network, Audio and Video Drivers.

They cables are free, they are there if you want a second hard drive for example, it looks fine.
Did you install the drivers? What graphics card do you have?
