XPS 8500 motherboard swap

I have a xps 8500 and I was told my motherboard is dead. Before going ahead and just getting a new 8500 MB, I'd like to know if I could install a newer 8700 which has 1 more SATA connection that I'm in need of?

Short answer, No. the CPU in an 8500 is a different socket than a CPU in an 8700.

8500s are socket 1155 (aka Ivy Bridge) and 8700s are socket 1150 (aka Haswell).

Yes, if you replace the CPU as well.

Yes, if you replace the CPU as well.

The OS will need to be reinstalled if the MoBo and CPU are upgraded.   M-Soft might transfer the license, but they might not.

I thought Memory on the 8500s is DDR3 1333 vs DDR3 1600 in the 8700.

The 8700 will work with with DDR3-1333 memory, but it is a tad slower and may be noticed in some workloads.

Another option for the 8500 is to get an add-in PCIe 1x card with SATA III ports. For $15 you can get a card with two SATA III ports.

The OS might just start up on its own. In that case, it will activate.
