XPS 8700 SYS_FAN1 Buzzing Noise
Hello,
There is a persistent, loud buzzing sound coming from my XPS 8700 (within the case) when a fan is connected to SYS_FAN1 on the motherboard. The buzzing sound completely disappears as soon as the cable is disconnected.
- This is the 2nd XPS 8700 that makes the same noise. (First unit was returned for a different reason).
- The noise occurs independent of what fan is connected to SYS_FAN1 on the motherboard. (Tried 3 different fans, including 1 identical replacement provided by Dell and 2 aftermarket fans)
- The noise occurs independent of all other powered components. (Disconnected every other component and powered the unit on)
- The noise occurs independent of input power. (Powered the unit on at different locations)
What could be causing the buzzing noise? Could it be fan speed? If so, is there a way to regulate it? Could it be coming from the motherboard?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Could this be a motherboard issue? Anyone have an idea?

I have the exact same issue. I have seen it on three separate xps 8700's. Dell has yet to offer up a solution to the problem. I am also experiencing buzzing from the headphones on conjunction with a discrete graphics card.
One of the only solutions I've been able to think of for the fan is to power a fan from the power supply directly and obtain one that has attachments to reduce the rpms. This is terrible behavior for a desktop computer.

Does anyone know if there is a way to monitor or control the fan speed?
I can see the temperatures on Linux, and probably Windows. I think most motherboards let you see the fan speed too, but the Dell doesn't? I searched for this all over and can't find it.
