XPS 8700 (mid 2013) No Headphones Sound

I cannot get sound using headphones (which work with other devices) and playback does not recognize headphones as an option.  Speakers work fine.

When I plug headphones into front jack the computer recognizes a device has been plugged into the audio jack.  Dell Audio asks me if it is headphones (yes) or front speaker, skull candy headphones or dell speaker output.  Selecting headphones appears to do nothing.  Playback is set to Realtek HD Audio and there is no headphone option.  It appears the driver is current.  Have had computer since Thanksgiving but this is first time I've attempted to use headphones.  Thanks.

The problem appears to be fixed although I'm not sure how.  I ended up re-installing the audio driver. During the process I came upon an update for a Realtek network driver that I had not seen before.  After installing both drivers the headphones still did not work but the computer wanted the headphones plugged in to play the main speakers even though they were working fine.  I simply reconnected the speakers and now everything appears to be working as it should.  So, I don't know if I could have simply reconnected the speakers originally or if the network driver was related.  Or whatever.

Hi Osprey.  Thank you for response.  I tried that yesterday without positive results.  The download version was same as what I have on my computer.  Maybe I did something wrong?  I am a novice at best. Below is the end of the install message from my attempt.  Appreciate your help - Marieli

Hi Marieli,

Please go to downloads and get the current driver for your sound card and install it. I've recently helped another forum member with this same issue and installing the driver fixed the problem.

No, the speakers remain active.  There is no indication in sound/playback
that headphones are plugged in. The Dell Audio box shows a
headphone icon in the Maxx Audio Pro tab when plugged in.  That changes to a speaker icon
when headphones are unplugged.

Well obviously the driver is not going to install over the same version.

When you plug in the headphones, are the speakers disabled as they should be?

I think that indicates a problem with the front jack. I would call Dell.
