XPS 8700 not updating to Windows 8.1

I tried to upgrade the system from Windows 8 to 8.1. After downloading the file, it rebooted and beeped 5 times then hung. I restarted the machine and it booted displaying a message "restoring former version of Windows" and finally informed that the upgrade was unsuccessful with an error code of:

Performing the following steps (which I grabbed from another thread) was what revealed the 8.1 upgrade in the Store in my case. I tried everything else but nothing worked.

1) Uninstall KB2871389 and reboot.

2) Download the KB2871389 update from Microsoft --> http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40098

3) Install the KB2871389 update manually and reboot.

4) The 8.1 upgrade should be visible in the Windows Store.

Thank you for that. I may try it... or I may wait for the confusion - with its many and varied solutions - to abate. My sense is that 8.1 comes with its own, brand-new and exciting little issues. I have a lot to learn with 8.0, so I may as well dig in and get as comfortable as one can on this OS before upgrading to what many refer to as "the usable version".

ALOT of problems can be avoided by doing the right steps before updating to 8.1

Update update update Windows 8 to the maximum before even trying to update to 8.1 will avoid 90% of the headaches people are running through.

Onyeah dont forget to invest in MS ecosystem.. make sure you have an actual MS Account login for all your future Windows needs going to the future.

Personally im switching over to all MS and dropping google's (android) ecosystem entirely... due to Post Snowden era.

just checked c:\dell\driver and the following folders were created in the order listed below...I think u should be able to map these to the specific driver on dell's driver website.

I have just got a new XPS8700, delivered about 10 days ago. I loaded up and let windows do all its various updates. The reason for this is when the PC arrived then 8.1 was not available to me in the windows store.

Having upgraded another PC from 7 to 8 to 8.1 I knew there are some specific windows 8 updates which have to be done before 8.1 appears n the store. The IDs of the update are easily found on the microsoft support website. just google can't upgrade to 8.1.

Once I had upgraded I had to reinstall Dell backup and restore and create a new recovery drive. I also used Dell support to check over my PC and they upgraded the Bios, as all other drivers can be done automatically but not the BIOS.

It sounds like some of you have the 8.1 upgrade available and then it fails,all I can say is I did nothing to my new PC except allow windows 8 to update before upgrading, it may have allowed Dell to update drivers as well during that period.

Performing the following steps (which I grabbed from another thread) was what revealed the 8.1 upgrade in the Store in my case. I tried everything else but nothing worked.

1) Uninstall KB2871389 and reboot.

2) Download the KB2871389 update from Microsoft --> http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40098

3) Install the KB2871389 update manually and reboot.

4) The 8.1 upgrade should be visible in the Windows Store.

This. This is the one thing that solved my problem as well. I didn't have to uninstall any dell software or anything, though I did update everything just before swapping out the old KB2871389 that came preinstalled on the system with the above linked KB2871389 update.

The big purple window is alllllll mine!!!

Thank you very much for posting this solution, Prius.

Yes, that solved for me too, with an extra final step: I needed to run "wsreset.exe" in order to have Windows Store's cache clean. After that, the Update got available. Thank you Prius2004 and FoxGloveLove!

And... Dell and MS, shame on you... Go figure what happened and do it fast.

This worked for me, too, on my new XPS.  Simple when you know how.  The big purple tile was a nice surprise.  Now to see if the update causes problems.

A thousand thanks.  Can now move on.

Under the Windows 8.1 FAQ, there is indeed a Upgrade Assistant.  I, too, downloaded it and it said I had two items that needed to be installed and then re-installed after upgrading to 8.1.  These were Dell Backup and Recovery and a Bluetooth High Speed program (that for some reason had two versions installed, and I just removed the older one).  After that, rebooted and re-ran the Upgrade Assistant.  It now says everything is good, but alas, 8.1 is nowhere to be found in the Store.  This is one a fresh 8700 that I opened today.  I'm not going to bother calling Dell because we all know they won't have a clue what is wrong.  Will post back when I figure it out...

Wish I had realized there were two pages to this thread before posting.  The Prius post above (uninstalling and reinstalling the KB) worked for me as well.  Glad to be through that.  Thanks community.  And I just shake my head at Dell and MS...

These steps were suggested by Prius2004 above and worked fine for me with addition of step 5:

1) Uninstall KB2871389 and reboot.

2) Download the KB2871389 update from Microsoft --> http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40098

3) Install the KB2871389 update manually and reboot.

4) The 8.1 upgrade should be visible in the Windows Store.

5) If it is not, press WindowsKey+R, type wsreset.exe and click ok.

I hope it helps.

Awesome!  This worked for me as well.  I love that this is not mentioned anywhere on MS' troubleshooting page for installing 8.1.

Thanks for posting, I really appreciate it.

I'll tell you what finally worked for me. I don't work for or have any association with this company but search for windows repair. I'm not sure which of the many repairs it runs fixed my issue, but it was indeed finally fixed. My problems were numerous on a fairly new machine including being unable to activate windows, constant messages to activate, non responsive controls including Change PC Settings, unable to make guest accounts and so on. I'm running 64 bit 8.1
