XPS 8900 & 4k support

I've recently purchased a new XPS 8900 desktop, along with the "upgraded" NVidia GTX 745.

I was disappointed to find out that this GPU only has an HDMI output, which means I can only get 30hz on my 4k monitor.

Given the fact that 4k monitors become the new standard, I believe such spec should be mentioned. Had I knew this ahead, I would have got the regular on-board video card version and then buy the GPU separately.

And a question - I'll probably buy an MSI GTX 950 card. Is it compatible with the XPS 8900 desktop?

The Display port on the XPS8900 is for the Intel graphics built into the CPU, and not the NVIDIA based card.  The GT730 is a mid ranged GPU.  There are other cards you can buy which support display port, that can drive a 4k display.

In order to power games at this resolution NVIDIA recommends GTX 780 SLI or better.

The current 4K UHD has four times the pixels of 1080p – which means four times the pixel workload.

SLI multi-GPU setups are required to ensure the smoothest experience at 4K resolutions.

You need HDMI 2.0 as well.

The Alienware Unit that does 4k video has 3 way SLI GTX 980's and a 1500W power supply.

 The current HDMI 1.4 standard only has bandwidth for 4K at 30hz. HDMI 2.0 adds support for 4K at 60Hz.

In order to power games at this resolution with settings turned up NVIDIA recommends GTX 780 SLI or better meaning 2 Cards Minimum.

4K resolution is obviously heavier on video memory consumption than lower resolutions. Four times the pixels will mean four times the memory used for screen sized buffers, in addition to any additional memory consumed by higher resolution source art. 12 GIGS of ram in TITAN Z SLI is not uncommon.

This is really annoying.  I have scoured this web site trying to find out if the Display Port was on the GPU.  Talked to sales, they had no idea.  SHEEESH!  Display Port was Dell's idea!  And they didn't even bother to put in on the card.....

And I can't  find anything about their power supplies.

Thanks for the reply.  I had hoped the XPS 8900's had the Display Port on the card.  My new Dell monitor was shipped with a Display Port cable.  It was all Dell's idea for this stuff to work together.

Has anyone tried connecting Dell 4K monitor to integrated DisplayPort? And set BIOS appropriately to use both on-board Intel and dedicated NVidia at same time?

Just wondering if it might work similar to a gaming laptop's hybrid video system.

So what is the value of using the Nvidia card compared to the Intel with 2 ports?

If not much, why what the nvidia card included which raises the price?

INTEL Graphics is ALWAYS going to be 20 times slower for 4k Gaming video.

Playing Blueray Disks  or static photos is something else entirely.

4K video is 400 percent more than HD 1080P.  This is why apple uses DUAL GPU for even their LOW end Mac pro.
