XPS 9000 with 3 Monitors
Hello,
I would like to connect 3 monitors to the XPS 9000. Does it support two video cards? The previous system, XPS 435 could only handle one video card. I called techical support about this, but they did not know the answer.

The XPS 9000 and XPS 435T look to be the exact same system other than the name. I think they renamed it to make it the 'big brother' of the XPS 8000, as that one is based on the P55 chipset instead of the X58 chipset (supports more dimms, more PCIe lanes, more memory, etc).

yustas33,
The available PCIe x16 slot video cards will support two monitors. You could add either a PCIe x8, PCIe x1, or PCI video card to power the 3rd monitor.

Yustas33,
There is only one PCI Express x16 slot in a Studio XPS 435T/9000.
I would have a look at the Matrox line of graphics cards. They have carved out a niche for themselves in multimonitor configurations.
One of my clients (a large brokerage house) has standardized on their products for their traders. Many have 3 or 4 monitors at their workstations.

Those denote the types of slots on the motherboard. Your motherboard has the following slots -
PCI
PCIe x1
PCIe x16
PCIe x1
PCIe x1
PCIe x8

Great, so I can add another video card, it is just not going to be as powerful as the main card, which is perfectly fine with me since I need the third monitor for work, not games. I do not even play games. I need XPS 9000 for web development and video editing.
What is the difference between PCIe x8, PCIe x1 and PCI. It looks like the PCIe x8 card would be the closest of the bunch to being current, but I know very little about video cards.
Thanks for the help.

Or, if you can wait a few months, it looks like AMD/ATI will have videocards that can support at least 3 monitors, and depending on the manufacturer, possibly even as many as 6 monitors on a single videocard.

6 monitors on a single card is very nice, but this card is probably going to be very expensive. No?

The 6 monitor card may be a bit more than normal due to the need of a few extras on the card, but the 3-monitor version will be chip-native, so I'd expect it's price range to be similar to current upper mid-range (i.e. US$200-300).

So any idea if Dell will be offering this card in XPS 9000 any time soon?

I have connected to 3 monitors with my Dell XPS 9000 and the 5870 video card.. Monitors are connected to the DVI ports and one to the HDMI port.
So far, I have only been able to get any two of them to work at the same time.. I have down loaded new drivers, asked everyone who would respond and same thing.
If anyone gets the 3 monitor setup to work, please post.

The only way to get three monitors to work with your HD 5870 is to use for example: 1 DVI port, 1 HDMI port and a Display port adapter(for your display port, the 4th slot on your card). the adapters are around $15-$30 clams with your choice for connecting either an HDMI or DVI cable. It can only work with 2 DVI's and Display port or DVI/ Display port/ HDMI. The key being display port adapter enabled for the three monitor setup.

Thanks, That does help.. I will order a port adapter.. I have seen other posts saying something about an adapter.. I did not know what they were talking about.. I can understand your post.. 1 DVI, 1 HDMI, 1 port adapter... I kept wondering why I needed an adapter, when my monitors were already hooked up.. Did not understand the relationship..
Thanks again..

Fresh Info..
I got in touch with Dell.. Asked about the port adapter.. I was told that I did NOT NEED ONE of those, and I needed either a 2nd internal video card, or a USB external Video card.. I ordered a USB External.. Will update this post if and when I get the thing, and see how it works.. IS A USB to DVI... Was told to unplug one of my DVI outputs I have now, and looks like I would have monitors, 1 = DVI 2= HDMI 3= USB to DVI..
More to come.
