XPS 9100 windows 10?

Has anyone installed windows 10 successfully?  I use Adobe LR and have thousands of photos that I don't want to mess up.

Asus monitor PA246Q

Epson 2200 printer

Dell isn't testing the XPS9100 so they do not recommend.  My laptop just installed windows 10 and it is working fine.  Doesn't have much on it.  But I don't want windows 10 install to start on my XPS9100 until I find out if it will work.

The issues with windows 10 are the same as the issues for windows 8.1. If you can run 8.1 64 bit you can run 10.

Even if its not supported it works fine with Vista or 7 drivers.

Works better with Windows 7 compatible Video and sound card.

Needs 2 Gigs of ram to run 4 gigs or more to run well.

Upgrading to a $50 radeon 6450 and an HDMI based monitor with sound is usually all you need.

Upgrading is not required to get it running.  I have upgraded systems as old as Optiplex GX620 without issue.

Speakers don't work nor headphones because Audio ESP or Microsoft UAA HD audio codec is not installed because the WIN7 driver and DOTNET and Directx June 2010 are not installed.  You have to reinstall the Legacy Driver and DOTNET support from control panel enable windows features.

Then install the OEM Vista or WIN7 or win8 32 or 64 bit drivers for your model dell.

Then everything will work again.

Directx June 2010 redist

Download details: DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)

directx_Jun2010_redist.exe
95.6MB
Supported Operating Systems:Windows 7;Windows Server 2003;Windows Server 2008;Windows Vista;Windows XP Service Pack 3

You download the file and EXTRACT TO A FOLDER Then run DXSETUP.EXE as administrator.

You also have to re enable DOTNET and Legacy Direct play.

Which Driver depends on the Exact Model of your dell AND 32 or 64 Bit.

I will echo SpeedStep...

Mine Dimension 9200, updated to Win 10 Pro x64 (Did a clean install using USB Key) works fine.

My Dimension 9200 Graphic card was replaced to Nvidia 250 GTX few years back due to failure of the one that was shipped with the desktop.

I must confess, that during the install my original Dell Bluetooth keyboard gave headache ... Took many attempt to get going...(Mine came with Dell Bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse. Dell BT mouse had to be replaced about 2 years ago with Logitech Bluetooth mouse. Logitech Mouse has a different BT)

The Win10 each time try to install a latest BT 3.00 which is not compatible with my Dell's wireless keyboard .

Except that it works well...

I know yours is Dimension 9100 and like SpeedStep highlighted if Win 7 runs, It should run Win10.

You wish to up grade to preserve few of your saved items... Whatever make sure you have backed up ..if not back it up prior to start on your venture.

Regards

Just a word of caution...

Not all systems running Win 7 or 8.1 can run Win 10, especially if Dell hasn't tested it.  If you look around these forums, there are quite few posts from users who upgraded their Dell 2710 All-in-One from W7 or 8.1 to Win 10, even though Dell hadn't tested that model for compatibility.

The upgrade to Win 10 seems to go ok on the 2710 but after a few days the system crashes and won't boot again. It gets a "black screen of death" requiring a new motherboard, apparently because Win 10 is corrupting BIOS.

I'm not saying you'll have the same kind of problem with your system, but since Dell hasn't tested it with Win 10, you should back up all your personal files on external media before starting the upgrade. And maybe image the Win 7 hard drive on external media too, just in case you need a quick retreat to Win 7.

Also keep in mind that Microsoft has pushed Win 10 on systems that can't even run anything beyond Win 7. They tried to install Win 10 automatically on this Dell desktop with Win 7 via Windows Update just this week, even though the CPU in this system doesn't support the NX function that's required for Win 8 and 10. Fortunately, I was able to cancel the upgrade before it crashed my PC.

So just because MS is pushing Win 10...well...if it ain't broke, don't BREAK it!  :emotion-5:

BTW: Win 7 will be fully supported by Microsoft until Jan, 2020 so there's still a lot of life left in this version.

5770 is a directx 11 card so it won't need to be updated.

You should have no issues with native windows 10 EXCEPT that the audio drivers may be win7 based and hibernation and sleep on usb and video may cause problems.

Once I turn the sleep settings to never the machine is fine.

The xps 9100 has

Sound:
THX® TruStudio PC™
  THX   1   [421-9898]

also has wireless keyboard and mouse that I added plus my own speakers

I found this listing on an old ebay item that is basically like my XPS9100

Will I have audio problems like you mentioned?  mine was built in feb 2011

I loaded it on mine and had to reload windows 7 supposedly due to bios issue on the xps 9100. It worked fine for a short while but as you know windows 10 downloads updates regularly and that is when things tarted to go south. Paid Dell tech support to try and get it running but pretty soon it would just blue screen over and over. I tried to restore the original operation system but in the end had to clean load from restore media that came with machine. Waste of money with Dell techs and not advisable to try windows 10 on this machine just yet. Maybe Microsoft will figure it out in the end.

THX® TruStudio PC™  is software associated with the Creative Labs Card.

No Guarantee that this works fine in windows 10.
