cant overclock cpu with XPS 630i from bios (Q9300)

i have the dumbest probem ever with this pc. dell has said that you could overclock this pc in the bios, ok so i got into the bios and change the fsb(QDR) from 1333 to 1440mhz to get a cpu speed of 2.7GHz (the Q9300 is 2.5GHz stock). ok so i change that and unink the memory and save and exit. but everytime i get no post, i get nothing so i have to boot my pc 3 times to reset the bios/cmos and change back to 1333mhz. no i didnt change any of the voltage settings and im getting to why next. after resetting the bios, i load vista (32-bit) premium and open the nvidia control panel. there i go to the cpu tab and change the fsb from 333 to 360 upping by 5 mhz at a time. while this is happening im not changing the voltage its stock at 1.238v and i can get to a fsb of 360mhz (2.7GHz) before it freezes (without changing voltages, after 2.7GHz i have to up them) . so i save that and make it load when windows starts and it works. why is it i can oc my cpu in the nvidia control panel but not the bios? its a little frustrating. now i would like to get this cpu to 3.0GHz. the highest i took it was to 2.8GHz but then i think i smelled smoke (i probably set voltages to high) so i returned them to the 2.7GHz settings. i noticed the motherboard in this pc has a highest cpu fsb of 1333mhz, so is the actual mobo holding me back form being able to oc in the bios? the max supported for the 650i sli is 1333. would i need to upgrade the mobo to be able to overclock in the bios? but if thats true then why is it able to overclock with the software? any explination to this and/or help would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure you hit enter after a change then F10 and enter again when you are all done. Make sure speedstep and C1E are disabled also and that memory is set to optimal. I've got my E8400 clocked 600 MHZ over and I think thats all I did. Hope you get it going.

you definitely can go higher than 1333 FSB, I'm at 1400 now.  Like mentioned before make sure you are actually saving the settings.  Also, if you predefined nvidia profiles, make sure u update them with you latest bios settings, this can cause conflicts if you don't.  Also, like the previous poster mentioned, the yorkfields don't seem to overclock too well, not sure if it is the chip or the mobo.

ok i really dont know "what" is going on. i cant even change the fsb in the bios from 1333 to 1334 and get a post screen. i up it one little mhz and get no post, this is busha, i disabled c1e and speedstep and i tried using f10 to save the settings but i still get no post. could someone with a xps 630i please explain how to do this cause this is getting old real fast. id like to get to 2.8GHz to 3.0GHz but my pc doesnt seem to like me very much. so any help would be great thanks in advance.

read shdbcamping's post - he quotes that your processor is not overclockable in the 630 via the BIOS....

yeah thanks for the links and info/help guys. im angered at the fact this pc was sold as "overclockable" but theres always a catch somewhere isnt there. i can get a 10% oc by using nvidia control panel and go from 2.5GHz to 2.7GHz on stock volts. i tried 2.8GHz with changing volts but it just freezes, so at least i did get what i could. i hope they fix this issue with the yorkfields so we can get that oc goodness too.

try this,

unlink memory and fsb.  Set the fsb to whatever 1400 or what not leave memory alone.  Now go into the voltage settings and apply a manual voltage to the CPU and FSB leaving the mem and chipset voltage to auto.

Add .05 to what ever the default was to start.  And see if you post.  

I know i couldn't post if i didn't have both the CPU and FSB voltage set to manual values.
