cpu maxing out on dimension e520

when ii boot up my dell dimension e520 the cpu immediately goes to 100% and very rarely shifts away form the max, this is causing me to be unable to run any programs without major crashing and slowness problems.

i have tried spybot search and destroy, anti virus and a complete windows vista reinstall but no luck its still maxing out

when i look to see wat process is causing the max out it seems that whatever app i am using at the time is causing it, for example while running spybot s and d, this was showing as using between 95 and 97% cpu, or when using internet explorer it is also showing 97% cpu usage.

any ideas would be much appreciated i ahve a feeling this may mean buying a  new cpu but i'm not sure

thanx rob

There are Dell diagnostics that can be accessed by F12 at power on.  Run the diagnostics (several times) to see if anything shows up.

Re: cpu maxing out on dimension e520

The fact that you have reinstalled the OS a couple of times indicates to me that it may be a hardware issue.  Your CPU is maxing out - Do you have any means of determining it's temperature, and comparing it to what a normal CPU of that make/model should be running at?  Also be sure to check your fans to ensure they are all spinning correctly, and are not hampered by dust or gunk.

How long have you owned this system?

i have owned the system for about 18 months, i havent tried testing the cpu temperature, how would i do this?

the cpu fan does work when the diagnostics test runs, but when the system is running i cant hear or see it working when the side is off

Re: cpu maxing out on dimension e520

Do you know who your motherboard was manufactured by?  If it is an Asus board, you can use Asus Probe, which is an application available from their website.  You should be able to find it through Google if you can't locate it on the Asus website.

Are you noticing any heat/warmth coming from inside the chassis while it is in use?  The average temperature inside the chassis is 10° to 35° C (50° to 95° F).

It *might* be the motherboard.  Give it a thorough visual inspection, and be sure to check the capacitors.  They resemble small cylindrical batteries that have been soldered to the bored.  Ensure that they are all in good repair.  If any of them look popped out, or leaking, that may be your problem.

Lastly, you mentioned that the fan isn't working when the system is running?  That is a definite problem.  Check the connections, perhaps replace the fan.

Let me know how you fare!

Re: cpu maxing out on dimension e520

thanks to everyone who replied and tried to help

i have solved and fixed the problem, it was the cpu. one of the dual cores had failed and this was why everything was maxing out the cpu.

once again thanx to everyone ...
