RE: dell 2300 processor upgrade

Compared with today's software, any Pentium 4 upgrades you could do to this machine would be irrelevant and a waste of time and money. You can't upgrade it to a modern CPU - you are limited to P4 chips. Even the best P4 chip (if even supported on this machine) can't touch even a modern Celeron CPU. I'd recommend looking into purchasing a cheap used system with an iCore or even Core2Quad CPU - anything in that lineup would out-perform your P4 system AND wouldn't cost much more than the P4 CPU upgrade.

RE: dell 2300 processor upgrade

i think you should be able to update the bios to the latest revision and then fit one of the later pentium 4's. if you really want to use this system i would recommend switcing to a linux distro like mint. these computers perform well when they want to.

The Dell Dimension 2300 uses Socket 478 prosessors with a maximum FSB of 400 MHz.

The fastest processor is a Pentium 4, 2.8 GHz.

Make certain you buy the correct one, as there is a 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 with a 533 MHz FSB available.

If the 533 MHz processor is installed in your system, it will run at 2.1 GHz.

Prior to installing the processor, check that you have BIOS Version A02 installed, when updated support for newer Pentium 4 and Celeron CPU's was added.
