hard-disk drive failure - pre-boot assessment results

Our computer is giving the message "hard-disk drive failure press f1"  but it just keeps repeating that message when I press f1.

I have run the ePSA Pre-boot system assessment.  It gives a green check to all devices listed on the left but lists n/a for hard drive.  But at end of test it tells me everything is ok.

Does this mean my hard drive is shot?  Any suggestions?

SATA 1 is probably the optical drive.   Your hard drive has indeed failed -- it would be attached to SATA 0.

You will need a new 3.5" desktop SATA drive to replace the faulty one.

Does the system see the hard drive at all? It sounds like the answer is no (F2 at powerup to check).  If that's the case, then yes -- the drive is shot.

When I turn on the computer and press f2 when the dell symbol appears the "Aptio Setup Utility" page comes up.  I can move over to the "boot" tab.  If I go down that page the "boot mode (UEFI)" is black and cannot be selected.

What does that mean?

If I turn on the computer it says:

hard-disk drive failure.  Strike the f1 key to continue.  f2 to run the setup utility.

When I strike f1 it says:

No boot device available.

SATA 0: None

SATA 1:  Installed

Strike the f1 key to retry boot. f2 to run the setup utility.

That is all I get.  I cannot get to my desktop or anywhere that lists the drives.

Look under "drives".  Is the hard drive showing there?

It sounds like the drive is completely dead.

Are there two drives in the system?  If so, what model system do you have?

I don't think so...

It is a inspiron 660s.
