i7-4790K support - 0PC5F7 Q87 Express motherboard

Jump to solution

I have an Optiplex 9020 MT i5-4570 - running A13 BIOS. This model can be configured with a Haswell i7-4790. Can it also support a Devil's Canyon i7-4790K? If so, what BIOS update do I need for the "K" and "non K" cpu?

Intel's Q87 Chipset Compatibility list supports both the i7-4790 and the i7-4790K.

The difference is locked or not for the clock.  Since the Motherboard does not allow for overclocking this is pointless.  3.6Ghz vs 4.0Ghz

3.6Ghz vs 4.0Ghz - you are referring to the base clks of the 4790 and 4790k respectively, correct? I agree, that would not make sense.

But, I'm thinking an upgrade from a i5 3.2Ghz (single-threaded) to a 4790k 4.0Ghz (hyperthreaded) cpu (even with no OC) is going to provide a tangible performance increase, yes? However, if the 4790k will not run at all, then a 4790 might still be a reasonable upgrade from an i5.

I believe you're implying that a 4790k 4.0Ghz (base) 4.4Ghz (turbo) can indeed work on Dell's 0PC5F7 mobo. The cpu and the Q87 chipset devices appear to be compatible with the mobo hardware. It's the BIOS (firmware) that determines what features are presented to the user -- eg. OC multiplier, Vcore, and other parameter tweaks.

My assumption is that today the 4790k will run with "SpeedStep" (honorable mention ) and turbo boost supported by the latest BIOS update. Tomorrow's BIOS update may allow OC. Whaddya think?

The 4th gen Haswell processors are interchangeable 1150 based units. The boost from I5 3.2Ghz to 4.4 Ghz would be 12 to 23 percent at best.  Its never 200 or 400 percent faster with more cores its a percentage and its smaller and smaller gain with each new core.  The 4790K appears to be 8 cores but its really only 4 real cores and 4 hyperthreaded (Fake) cores.

You can do the same with an Inspiron 3847 where the I7 4790K does fit and does work. Dell does not however support this.

As long as you redo the thermal paste without overdoing it the stock cooler is just fine.

Thanks, SpeedStep, for your encouragement and insight. Someone on this forum put a 4790k into an XPS 8700 with OC. Of course, that machine is equipped with a Z87 mobo 0KWVT8.

I'm going to attempt this upgrade. An i7-4790k is not going to be wasted. I'll put it in something .

Just got a fresh syringe of Arctic Silver 5. Redid my ASUS G50 cpu/gpu heatsinks. Wonderful results!

I looked at several of your posts. I'm on Tom's Hardware... very impressed with your tech wits.
