power light off - hard drive light on

We've got a dell dimension 4600. I recently installed 2 new 1G memory sticks in the 1 & 2 slots and the old 1G stick in the 3 slot. The computer seemed to have memory problems in the past (beep codes) so I cleaned out the memory slots. This helped but it still has problems. It will run ok for long periods but sometimes it will freeze and I have to hold in the power button to get it to turn off. Sometimes when I turn it back on, the power light is off and the hard drive light is on. Maybe a power supply problem? Sometimes the power light is amber. When it's amber, I have to unplug the computer or it won't turn back on.

I recently upgraded from windows xp to vista business.

Help appreciated.

An update: the last time the computer froze I had the task manager running and noticed that the cpu was at 100%. The power light and hard drive lights were green and all 4 of the diagnostic lights were green.

Maybe the cpu is going bad?

Hi cisz8,

Please let us know the specification of the new memory sticks in comparison to the old one.

I did not find Windows Vista compatible drivers on support website for this system model.

Perform diagnostics on the system using steps below:

1. Restart system
2. Tap F12 on Dell logo
3. Select Utility Partition
4. Hit enter

Please let us know the result of the diagnostics.

Thanks & Regards

Hello Manshu,

The hd doesn't seem to have a utility partition although when I press F12 it gives the option for one but when I choose it it just boots to the normal windows login screen.

The old memory stick was a Kingston KVR400X64C3A    2.6V   1Gb

The new sticks are Dell SNPJ0203C/1G

I've removed the Kingston one to test out how the computer functions without it.

I noticed that Dell doesn't supply drivers for Vista when I tried to upgrade the video driver.

Thanks for your help.

Hi cisz8,

As you mentioned that issue persists without kingston memory, I would suggest you to remove Dell memory stick and check.

This will help us isolate if it is an issue with Dell or Kingston memory.

If issue persists in both the cases, I would suggest you to perform virus scan on the system. Virus scan is required because you informed that last time system crashed CPU utilization was 100%.

It can be because of unknown application running in the background.

Thanks & Regards

However, several times now (since  1st reporting on it) the computer jammed and the cpu wasn't at 100%.

It still has the problem with the dell memory sticks removed and the kingston memory installed.

I have noticed that the computer seems to jam especially when not being used as if keeping the cpu or memory (or whatever) busy keeps it open. Also, recently the computer seems to always get a yellow power light when starting up after sitting off for a long time. If I let it warm up with the yellow light still on, and then turn it off and reboot, it's able to boot. If I don't let it warm up 1st, it continues to show a yellow light after restarting. It will also sometimes reboot on its own although I've tried to turn it off by holding in the power button for several seconds (until it turns off).

Hi CISZ8,

We are sorry for the delayed response. Try releasing the static power and check the system is working. Follow the steps below.

Switch off the system; remove the battery, ac adapter and the power cable. Press and hold down the power button for thirty seconds to drain any excess static power. Please install my Dell download in the system and then run the diagnostics using the link below.

http://dell.to/1kYOKQq

In this link click on Download my Dell > open my Dell application > click on checkup > PC checkup> custom scan> select the memory> click on run test.

Let us know about the progress.
