re: No audio after xp pro installation

I am so frustrated from reading for hours upon hours after reinstalling the windows xp pro.  I orignally had xp home and now all sound is gone.  I can see the computer registering the sound in the visualizations on windows media player, but I can't hear a thing!  I've updated the drivers of the integrated audio SoundMAX and when that didn't work, upon desperation prior to a choir trip, I purchased a Creative Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit and upgraded it's driver and disabled the SoundMAX.  Still nothing!  I've been throught troubleshooter upon troubleshooter and none of them work either!  I'd like to just go back to xp home, but it won't let me do that either!  Aaaargh!  I looked into upgrading the BIOS cause when it boots it says its AO1 and tried using some help info on that, but the screen flashes up and then off so fast you can't even blink!  Then I installed a Dell program to tell me what I had on my system and it said v.A09?!  That can't be right.  Then another page confirmed the A01 v.  I've also tried going back to xp home, but it won't let me do that either.  Says it can't delete that partition.  I'm really at a loss. I don't know why this has to be so hard.  AlI I want is my sound back!  Please help if you can.  A silent computer is useless to me!

Re: re: No audio after xp pro installation

Did you reinstall the Dell chipset drivers, after installing the new Operating System?  If not, install the chipset drivers and then reinstall the sound card drivers.

Re: re: No audio after xp pro installation

Okay, I went to the dell downloads page and reinstalled the chipset drivers for my os, and then reinstalled the sound drivers, still nothing.  Any other ideas??  Thanks for your time.

Re: re: No audio after xp pro installation

When you installed XP (Pro), did you just do an install over top of the exisiting Windows XP or did you start over with a "clean" install by reformatting the hard drive then reinstalling everything?

Although XP Pro just adds some additional functions to the Home version, installing over top of an existing install can lead to many problems.  Ultimately, you need to do the clean install.  I know it is a hassle but it's the best way to go.  Backup you user data before doing the clean install as it will be all gone.

The install sequence for a clean install (after reformatting the hard drive) is (1) Install the OS, (2) Install the Dell chipset drivers (3) Install any other Dell device drivers and drivers for added hardware (such as the SB Live) (4) Install any Dell supplied applications that you want to reinstall (5) reinstall your user applications and restore your user data.

One other issue, and it doesn't directly relate to no audio.  I see you only have 256 MB of memory (RAM).  That is really insufficient and in "real world" is bare minimum for Windows XP.  More is really needed for better XP operation. I don't know how much the 2350 will take but if you can, upgrade it to 512Mb.

Re: re: No audio after xp pro installation

I'm certain I sound very ignorant, and probably am, but what would be the steps for formatting my hard drive?  Would I go into DOS and type format c:, and wouldn't that wipe out the DOS program itself?  How would I get that back if need be, so that all I have to do is put in the xp Home cd and it'll go from there?

Thanks for your time fireberd!

Re: re: No audio after xp pro installation

I'm having the same problem except I didn't install a new OS. Don't know if that helps or not, but I can't hear any audio from speakers or headphones and I can see indications that audio is in fact playing.
The drivers seem to be ok, nothings muted, etc.
I'm on a Dimension 8400 running Windows XP Home Edition.
Trouble shooting hasn't helped me either.

Re: re: No audio after xp pro installation

I have finally fixed the problem. Try going into the Device Manager and updating all your sound drivers. I have an onboard driver which was selected as the driver, but the Audigy driver which is another sound card had an error with the driver. Some how it affected the audio anyway even though I was using onboard. I updated the Audigy driver and the sound is working again after I have selected the Audigy. Hope that helps.
