ridiculous question...

I am curious roughly how much a CPU with ~200-300GB RAM would cost. I realize it's an absurd request but I currently run my programs off a super computer and I was wondering if buying a CPU would be a reasonable alternative.

By "cpu" I assume you mean a desktop computer.

There are no currently available desktops that can support that much memory.   A Precision T7500n comes close at 192GB pre-installed (with 12 DIMM slots), but at a cost of $230,000 over base price.

yup, that's what I meant.  hmm, not cheap!  I guess I'll be waiting in the super queue.  thanks for the reply!

Yeah, us "run-of-the-mill" desktop users are just now getting models that support 16GB or more for any reasonable price (a Studio XPS 435MT can be had with 24GB memory for a measly $4200 :emotion-4:.   

Desktop technology has come a long way - my 2-year-old desktop is practically a museum piece already.     But it hasn't quite caught up with the supercomputers yet.  :emotion-2:
